The only risk would be not emptying it. That is the reason (I believe) the manufactures don't put them on most cars. they require maintenance and can cause problems if they are not emptied. They will probably cause more problems than they are worth for the average person that never opens his hood to check anything between oil changes.

The dealer can't deny warranty for something like this, and if you are afraid then just take it out before warranty work on your engine.

Very good read, and yes, you should change the oil regularly.

I wonder if the Tacoma here that reached 400,000miles was a 3rd gen? Different engines produce different levels of blow-by and catch can vary in what they collect depending on the engine. Certain engines will benefit more than others. Until we know more about this new engine it would be premature to speculate.

    I agree with you 100%

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to clarify a few things. A lot of people come here for advise and if a person doesn't want to use and oil separator then don't. But at least lets give the members all the information so they can make an informed decision.

I guess the bottom line is how much blow-by do you want going in your engine? Thats essentially what an oil separator does, remove blow-by from entering your engine.

Don't forget, that the factory installed catch cans, return the oil back into the crank case. To aid in a "maintenance free" component. At least until the vacuum hoses crack, or the orifices clog up. Even that takes a long time.

You are correct. In fact almost all motorcycles have them installed and they drain back into the engine. I have found a few cars that have them and they do drain back to the crank case as well. And it's like you said, to make them maintenance free.

Somehow this quote did not come through properly:
This is simply not true, engines last much longer now because they burn much cleaner. The EPA mandated PCV systems in the mid 60's and even going forward 10 years, the engines in the 70's with a PCV system last no where near as long as an engine today. So what changed? Its not the PCV system, it was the emissions control, development of better heads, the removal of lead from fuel etc. Also there is no lubricant that should be on the upper walls of cylinders. Every engine has oil control rings UNDER the compression rings and they are designed to keep the oil OUT OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER. The oil lubricates the upper cylinder walls when the piston is at TDC. There should be no oil in the combustion chamber as burnt oil creates carbon build up.

This statement is inaccurate as every engine produces "nasty" stuff regardless of what oil you run. That's one of the reasons that vehicles that run short trips should get oil changed more often

Up for debate, but, many times spark knock is not heard by the human ear, but when data logging cars (used when doing performance tuning) it can be seen.

This is false, this engine is a port injected/direct injected engine. Direct injected engines offer no cleaning to the valves as fuel is sprayed right into the cylinder, port injected engines offer minimal to the valve stems as there is fuel sprayed before the valves. Port injection delivers fuel the same way as a carburetor, before the values. Fuel can only be entered 2 ways, before or after the valves.

I agree partially with you in that if spark knock is detected due to a lower octane (oil in fuel mixture) the PCM will compensate for that, but it does that by retarding the timing thus reducing the power. I don't think my truck has enough power so I don't want to loose any more.

    Thanks,

I just want there to be proper information out there, I don't sell these oil separators and have no interest if a member buys one or not, but just want to put out as accurate info as possible so that someone who is thinking can make an informed decision.

    :)

Pics of my catch can installation. I had to mount on the left side because I have a 6spd and the clutch reservoir is in the spot OP used.

Thats a great looking install. What type of catch can is that? I like the looks of it. Nice job :)

Not much but I have only driven roughly 380 miles with my catch can installed. Smelled like gasoline.

every bit that comes out is a an amount that doesn't get into the combustion chambers so thats good. Mine is about the same as yours in the warmer months. In cold weather (I live in Canada) it traps a bunch of condensation so I empty mine every two weeks as its catching the condensation.

I went ahead and added one as well. Mounted to passenger side since the switch-pro is on the drivers. I couldn't find the add w1 but this looks to be an exact clone on Amazon for $50. Easy and relitively cheap mod considering the benefits. Thanks OP
