Does anyone know what gauge wire runs to the lights? I could tell you how many amps continuous it is rated for. The 85w bulbs will draw 7.1 amps. The 70w bulbs, only draw 5.8 amps. Current = heat, which in time destroys the insulation. I'm sure the stock wiring is at least 18 gauge, if so, it can healthily handle the 5.8 amps.

It was discussed way earlier in the thread in depth about how it is possible, and backed by calculations. The OEM fuses are 10 amps. However the harness alone increases the efficiency, the exact numbers I believe were also measured and reported earlier, meaning more power to the bulbs than the factory harness which causes them to burn brighter and produced increased light output than just doing the bulbs alone.

Found it, see this post. While he used a different brand harness, note the chart in the link included in that post about the voltage drop relationship to lumen output, and it is very easy to see how a small drop in voltage quickly reduces output, so by installing the harness noticeably greater output is achieved.

Well finally got a break in the weather this weekend and swapped out my HIDs for this new set up.
Just came back from a drive down some pretty dark backroads and all I can say is WOW!! These bulbs are BRIGHT and light up the road really good, didnt even need the highbeams! I had to lower them a touch as I got flashed a few times, all good now.
The only thing I did different is I ordered the relayed harness off Ebay insted, looks to be heavy duty with big ceramic plugs.
Big thanks to crashnburn80 for starting this thread, nice to be able to see at night again :)

So I just talked to Ray at Rally Lights and he said if you use their harness and it the truck has factory DRL's that they will need to be disabled? Is this the case with those of you who have already done this mod? I kind of like the look of the DRL's on my truck and would hate to lose them.

This was covered earlier in the thread. They will be disabled if you have *Headlight* DRLs (which seem rare). If you have amber indicator DRLs the function remains unaffected. This is because the new headlight relay will operate as a master on/off switch for the higher power, where as the DRLs that operate as headlights run the headlights at reduced voltage for the DRL function. Again this does not affect amber DRL function, only if you have headlight DRLs.

Thanks crashnburn. I didn't dig deep enough into the thread to find it. Great thread and I am hoping it lights up the road such that I won't destroy a deer on my 5 am commute through rural East Tennessee.

Has anyone tried these on a 2001-2004? I tried the LEDs and they threw light everywhere.

Any reason this setup shouldn't/wouldn't work?

It will work great. Your stock bulbs are 9003's and these are just brighter 9003's. The beam pattern should be exactly the same as stock, just more light.

Looks nice. My concern is that the extra heat from the lamps will play some havoc on the head light housings as they were probably not designed to deal with the extra heat.

Maybe someone who hasn't contributed to the thread already has had one?
    :notsure:
I have aftermarket housings so we will see how they hold up.
