Ping in front end

My 2012 DCSB has developed an audible ping in the front end ever time I shift from drive to reverse when I apply the brakes. It only does it once after that it's quite. Am I looking at a brake issue or something else (LCA bushing, CV Shaft, Front diff) before I start chasing my tail on this I want to see if anyone else has dealt with it before.

Just over 60,000 miles been lifted 3 inches new LR UCA with ball joint installed 2 years ago.

I am about to pull the wheel to see what I can find.

 

Sounds like you might have the brake pad "slap" problem. The floating caliper design allows the pads to shift. Usually happens once going in each direction and then they're good.

 

Anything I need to worry about?

 

If it's the brake slap, then it's nothing to worry about. Is it just audible or can you feel it from the cab?

 

Just can hear it can not feel it.

I agree that what he is hearing is the brake pads shifting in the caliper. However the Tacoma doesn't have Floating Calipers. The Tacoma has Fixed Calipers.

Edited: Correction: The 5 lugger Tacoma does in fact have a floating caliper. All 6 lugger Tacoma's have a fixed caliper.

Same year, similar mileage, similar lift, same sound: it's the brakes. Don't worry about it unless they start to feel weak. I had mentioned it to Toyota when mine still had new-truck smell and he told me they'd grease them if I wanted but the sound will be back in a few weeks.

 

Mine does it also when switching directions the pads reseat and you can hear it.

 

Thanks! There are a bunch of threads here saying we have a floating caliper, but it never made sense to me how we would have the pad slap with a floating caliper. Sanity restored again, thanks to Jimmy.

 

I installed a second retainer clip on my pads on the recommendation of some here - it didn't help. I've heard that applying a little brake pad grease to the back side of the pad where it's in contact with the caliper, not where it contacts the disk alleviates the problem.

The 5 luggers might have floating calipers... but the 6 luggers surely do not. its a 4 piston fixed caliper.

 

WTF i though you were supposed to apply grease to the stopping surfaces of the disk and pads.......

This is correct, I just looked it up in the service manual.

5 Luggers have floating calipers.

6 luggers have fixed calipers.

 

Never under estimate the power of stupid.
