U joints?

So my center support bearing is bad (carrier bearing) and I was also going to replace any u joints while I have that section of shaft out.
Are U joints "one size fit all" or do I need a specific size? Are there different sizes throughout the shaft?
Any help would be great, thanks guys!

 

Couple threads for you, I assume its on your 2011 you have as your vehicle? I went to NAPA and had them look the ujoint up. They said I needed 3 but on my 2000 Tacoma I only needed 2 so depends what yours is set up like. The cardan joint is a whole different thing so I just ended up changing the ujoint by the trans and by the rear axle and greased the cardan joint. I already had to take of the driveshaft to replace my center bearing so I just did the U-joints while it was out. You can go to Autozone and rent the ball joint puller and you can replace your ujoints with that.

the u-joints were the same part# for the two I had to replace.

The U-joints on our generation of taco are all the same size. Spicer 1330 series is stock, although they cost 4 times as much from the dealer as from the parts store. For some reason, Prerunners are not greaseable, however I would advise upgrading to a serviceable joint if that's the case. Napa carries an off brand, be warned I had one grenade on me. It's not worth saving a few bucks to go with the house brand, get genuine Spicer!

 

U joints are like tires, you get what you pay for. I'd research which brand is better and spend the money on a good one. You can physically see the difference between a a good and a cheap one, and don't let a guarentee fool you. Like Tommy boy said "I can take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I've got the time".

 

I bought Moog joints. Any good?

 

Yeah they are fine, as long as they have grease zerks and you give them a shot of grease once a year, they will last a long time.

 

I have lost all faith in MOOG components. A buddy replaced his front end parts on an all stock Dodge 2500 using all MOOG parts, it drove horribly and was all over the road. Two alignments later, he pulled all of their ball joints back off and replaced them, problem solved! I hope their u joints are better. I did use their parts back in the day and they were quality, I'm not sure what happened but I have heard the same since.

 

I'd return the Moogs and get some Spicers.

 

After what I and others here have gone through with moog lca bushings I'm done with them.

Spicer 5-1330-1X. I called Spicer to ask what the differece was between

$27 5-213X U-Joint Kit 1330 Series (OSR)

5-213X and 5-1330-1X. Both will fit and both are greasable. The 5-213X has the zerk fitting on the body and double seals, the 5-1330-1X has the zerk located on the end of one of the caps and has triple seals. The 5-1330-1X is beefier and a better choice for severe use such as offroad. There is a non greasable version of the 5-1330-1X. It's part number is

5-1330X. I was able to purchase 3 of the Spicer 5-1330-1X on Amazon for a little under $75 with free shipping.

 

The spicer is definitely the way to go.

 

I just replaced all three U joints with Spicer 1330-1x and replaced carrier bearing with OEM one from stealership. Really smooth now

 

OK. Maybe I'll return the moogs and get Spicer. I really hope replacing these parts will solve my vibration / shudder problem. I'm scared it may be a tranny issue

 

Ya dude you might have to order online but they are easy to get. Most auto parts stores don't have them. I went to a special driveline shop for mine and he was only going to charge 17 bucks per U joint in labor and 20 bucks for a carrier bearing to install but you have to bring the drive shaft into them. I thought that was a good deal but i ended up doing it myself. Im sure it will fix vibration

^^^ Same here. A long time ago I worked at a parts jobber and anyone who wanted the best asked for Moog. Not anymore. What happened? They bellied up and the name and few assets were purchased by Federal Mogul. So now they try to sell horrible parts based on laurels of Moog from long ago. Their stuff now is some of the worst junk going IMHO. But for the OP, in this age of reboxing, before you return them take a peek to see of you may have received Spicer. Look for 1330 on the parts and maybe the Spicer name, you never know...

 

I ordered them online. I just contacted the seller and told him to cancel my order of shit in a box and he kindly refunded my $. I then went to Amazon and ordered Spicer.
