Just wondering, this is my first 4x4 vehicle.....

So in a few weeks im heading up to the snow, and just wanted to check the 4 wheel drive to make sure its working (since I bought from an owner and not a dealership).

So while stopped I turned it into 4x4, heard it click in, so I started driving around. Nothing fast just around my street. But what felt strange was when I slowed down and turned (kinda sharp) the truck felt like it went into a low low gear, and a little harder to turn.

    Idk... am I a noob?

To answer your question- You are a newb. That is driveline resistance.

Forcing something that doesn't feel right to you in the drivers seat means you were on the verge of breaking shit....Wouldn't ever try that again....if you want your driveline to continue to work at least...

I'm new to the site as well but have never driven anything besides a 4x4 vehicle. I've experienced this in all of them (2 jeeps and my current taco) and have asked other 4x4 owners and they said its normal. The best way I can explain it is that since you are in 4WD power is being delivered to all 4 tires. Any time you are turning you can essentially imagine you are making a circle and since the outside wheels are further away from the center of this imaginary circle, even tho the tires are being fed the same power, there is a small difference in the rotations of the tires so it is harder to turn. At higher speeds this difference is negligible thus less noticeable. May not be the accurate wording but thats the idea behind it as it was explained to me. Thats why they tell you not to use 4x4 without snow.

    ^^^what they all said..haha

4x4 is not the same as AWD and is not meant for driving on the road due to the fact that the wheels need to go diff speeds when turning and in 4x4's they cannot do this which can cause serious break downs..

thats right in what you say about diff speeds but wrong in the fact that at higher speeds it is less noticeable.. the higher the speed the more stress you will put on the front wheel drive parts
NEVER put in in 4x4 at high speeds on the road!!!!

you could do some SERIOUS damage..i.e. destroy your front diff, snap an cv axle etc...

I haven't a clue, so will say none.

What you described tells me it is working as it should.

What people are saying, is don't drive it in 4x4 on DRY concrete, at least at any kind of speed.

If you are in snow or wet pavement and you go to slipping or sliding by all means slip it in to 4HI.

Be safe, use it when you have to.

    Just my two centavos worth...

I was told by my dealer that once a month I need to put it in 4 high and drive it for a few miles to keep everything lubricated and in check. This to me means pavement so I do it.It won't hurt a thing and is mandatory according to my dealer.

I have an 09 and in the owners manual it says to drive it for 10 miles every month in 4 wheel drive, just to keep all the parts moving and lubed.
But then who reads the fuggin manual:eek:

4x4 on dry pavement is a bad idea because it can cause you to flip. it binds when you turn because the rear wheels want to push you straight while the front are trying to pull you to the side. You can also feel the inside tire hop and push forward. It shouldnt break anything. It will tear up tires bad though. The reason it is unsafe is if you turn while driving normal speeds the tires will pull the front of the vehicle to the side which can cause a vehicle to flip.

Im not saying its fine for the drive train because it will cause parts to wear extremely fast. Im saying that it shouldnt snap a cv or destroy the diff. instantly.
