Can't blame you for loving those wheels. I got 16x8 w/285/75/16's & only a 2.25" level up front.

i have plenty of power in my 1st gen...its the 3.4l V6...as for cabin noise...well...hard to say...its been so long haha...i have skid plates underneath that make mine sound louder inside and i like my windows down...

as far as lifting to fit 16inch rims...thats a negative...it all depends on what tire and how big it is as to whether or not you'll need to lift

1st gens come with 15" and 16" rims from the factory

With those taxes and some here still want universal health care.
OK back on the subject. By the time you paid all the duty taxes to buy in the US it probably wouldn't be worth it.
Without looking it up I recall you gain an additional 50 HP and 50 # of torque going from the 3.6 to the 4.0 V6. And you also gain another gear manual or auto.
My '99 was an Xtra cab and had less wind noise than this '08 Access cab. The DC's may seal better. I think the paint and some things were better quality on the '99. However this new one is more comfortable and roomy and getting 2-3 mpg better gas mileage with quite a lot more pep. I was happy with the '99 and it never gave me any problems. I was just ready for a change and wanted a little more power to occasionally pull a trailer in the mountains.
I only ran the stock wheels on each. 15" on the '99 with 31x10.50" and still have the 16" with the stock 265/70-16 tires on this new one. Never raised the '99 and have only slight lift of 1" on this new one with the TSB and Bilstein 5100's.
I haven't had a I-4 since my '84 but they are a great engine and get quite a bit better mileage than the V6. Being in Canada make sure you closely look over the frame for severe rust and corrosion problems due to road salts especially on the earlier trucks. Hope this helped and good luck.

Well, the engine on the first gens is a 3.4, and you cant go wrong with them.
The 5VZ-FE is a 3.4 L (3378 cc) engine. Bore is up to 93.5 mm (3.7 in) and stroke is 82.0 mm (3.2 in). Output is 190 hp (142 kW) at 4800 rpm with 220 ft·lbf (298 Nm) of torque at 3600 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses MFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets and features large cast connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold.
The 5VZ-FE also continued the 3VZ-FE's trend of being far overbuilt for its intended application & many stock, semi-modified non-turbo and non-suprechargered engines continue to be considered one of the more reliable small truck or SUV V6 engines ever made. A handful of built versions exceed 900 hp (670 kW), and some stock engines can produce 450 hp (336 kW) or more. This has become a popular engine to consider when doing engine swaps with the availability of the 3.4 L TRD supercharger and custom turbocharger setups.
Also, as it is an cast iron engine block, if there is ever a problem with a scored cylinder wall, or the like, it can be easilly bored out, and re biult. The 4.0 (1GR-FE) is aluminum, and can not be rebiult.
The 3.4 is a smooth running engine, and with regular maintinance (the big one being 90,000 miles timming belt replacement), it will last longer than the chassis its mounted in. :)

Great info Chris! I've loved both of the 3.4L engines I've had and the trucks they powered, the first in my '98 4x4 TRD, and of course the engine in my current '03. They are incredibly reliable (dare I say almost "bullet proof"), and you simply can't go wrong if you keep up with recommended service requirements..
