Then I would have to leave at like 8AM. My body will be dead by 8:30AM if that happens

On the 29th? You'd get to Moab with enough time to hit all the bars the day before....

Cali could be pretty great. Lots of sweet shit to explore outside of town. Too bad this fucking city is a shithole. Fun to work in. ....not so much to live in.

We could go all the way to Capital City KOA in Topeka, 13 hours from me, Day 1.

Topeka to Moab is another 14 hours.

If the replacement shackle BS is here by Sunday I'm in for a little exploring @MR2

@Tretiak30 I don't know why you are looking at rest stops and camp grounds when there are so many free spots to camp across the country... https://freecampsites.net/ also: boondocking.org

Mark, which city were you in? I would have to agree that most of cali wilderness/canyons is great for exploring yet the state suffers from some utterly shit cities.

Micah, trailer it. You'll regret it if you don't.

@mwc273 I understand your apprehension about "camping" at rest areas. That being said, it is perfectly ok. Rest areas aren't like parks, they don't have hours when they're closed. During the day time it isn't unusual to see people set up picnic/campy arrangements in the grass by the toilet-house/visitor-bog/whatever building. At night, it shouldn't be any different. Sure, an RTT sticking out the top of a truck bed might look a little strange, but at night rest stop parking lots are full of vehicles with people sleeping in them. The tent might make you stick out a bit more, but I don't think it will really cause any legal problems. I sleep in the bed under my cap, but i doubt a tent would cause a kerfuffle. Hell, the further West you go, the more frequently you will see signs on the side of the road imploring you to pull over and sleep as long as you want in a designated sleepy/safety side-of-the-road zone! I can't imagine highway patrol anywhere would be so fucking ignorant as to think they should punish you for making the safe call and snoozing a few hours instead of risking a wreck.

Well, other than SD, we are talking about the best part of California...

Go further south and you'll be disappointed until you get far clear of LA and the OC!

Yeah. I couldn't live in a large community and I want to have access to recreational opportunities, ocean, mountains. On paper, and from my two prior trips through this area (bike in 2010 and truck in 2015), Humboldt Co seemed like the shiznit. Right on the Pacific, backed up against the mountains, numerous national forests, the Lost Coast, giant fucking redwoods, the PCH, chill people and a community about as big as where I live and work now, in a nicely rural area.

But now that we're boots on ground and looking at housing here, and looking around at the neighborhoods, I don't want to live here. It's not the money, really, I mean housing is stupid expensive but you gotta pay to play. It's that housing is stupid expensive AND you're paying a premium to live in a shitty one bedroom next to a bunch of MS13-color wearing cholos. I don't think I could live with myself if I sold my nice house in a nice neighborhood in Ohio for a loss, just to move to a shitty shit hole in Cali and spend double for it. The recreational opportunities nearby would be awesome but in the end, I'd have to go home to the fucking barrio.

A lot of people mother fuck Ohio and some guys who live there claim to be "stuck" there. I'm starting to see that Ohio is actually a pretty decent burden to have.

We have a few more days out here but honestly, I'm leaning hard towards scrapping this idea.

Plus I could use my moving savings for a decent lift and bumpers!

The benefit to barrio dwelling is the Taco truck though....

Another thing to consider is on and off ramps..think about how many truckers park their rigs on the gravel berms and sleep for the night..usually on the more remote or less traveled ramps

@WheelInTheSky sounds good, I talked the guy I work with who has the rubicon jeep and winch to come as well so at least I wouldn't be alone. Anything after that is just gravy on the biscuit. No time planned yet as of now.

Anyone else wanting to adventure around Coshocton on Sunday just keep it in mind and let me know for sure when it's closer to that time.

As far as short term "sleeping" spots go, you guys aren't thinking outside the box enough. You can park a truck and sleep anywhere. My favorite places are churches, but I've slept at car dealerships, city parks, rest areas, abandoned businesses, behind cell phone towers, down oil well lanes, etc.

Generally no one cares as long as it's evident that you are catching a few hours sleep as opposed to "camping " in a place. Hell, on the bike I've literally ridden it into a building under construction that had the roof already up but no doors, and slept in there. ...got woke up in the morning by the construction guys and they didn't even care.

This is especially doable if you are obviously on a road trip. An out of state plate buys you a lot of leeway with people.
