I messaged the machine shop on facebook and they quickly responded asking me to call on Monday and where the truck was located. I am curious to hear their opinion and pricing. So far they have been great to work with

Me too, I dont think a valve and ring job should be crazy expensive. They seemed to be fair on pricing with everything else.

Picked up some grease for the cruiser in the mean time. I'll also get under and check out the gear oil to make sure it isn't low with the leak.

Looked into the axle seal project more and it really doesn't seem that bad. During er nasty but should be a good project for the lady to start on. Time consuming but pretty straight forward.

Called the shop. They are going to meet me at my place this afternoon and look at the truck. I am assuming they just want to make sure they are not getting something that I mangled or will be receiving a bag of nuts, bolts and engines parts all intermixed.

Well just talked to the guy. For sure it needs a valve job and thats the first step. Pulling the head looks to be quite a bit of work...or should I say time. Something I don't have until summer. He isn't looking to do the mechanical side of things and usually has a mechanic do it. He is going to call around and see what he can do as far as finding a mechanic to pull the head, etc.

He says it should be less than a new engine but until we dig into the head we won't know.

At 50,000 miles he is pretty damn sure there isn't a ton of damage. He believes it is the valve guides and possibly the rings but that is unlikely unless I sucked in some serious dirt.

That said, if anyone is interested in helping me pull the engine to get it to him, he charges $55 an hour and he could get it in top shape in no time. I don't want to take on that job alone with 0 experience.

It sounds like you are half way to rebuilding the whole motor. If you put the motor yourself, take a lot of pictures and label everything and make good notes. Good luck!

Yeah, I wish I could feel good about doing everything myself. My luck the LC will just catch on fire for no reason. So I want to get my truck moving asap.

Ok, I am organizing a motor tear out party for the weekend of March 4th. The following members have shown interest and I can not thank them enough. I am going to try and get a list of tools needed and secure them. I can rent an engine hoist for the weekend. If you guys can, bring tools. Laramie is a small town and tool stores are severely limited. This project has been halted several times due to me not being able to find the right tool for the job.

@Night Eagle , he has experience with pulling and swapping motors.
@jgantzler , has power tools that may expedite the process
@mizzac , more social reasons but can help wrench and what not.
    @shipps , Engine Swap/Dog photographer

I'll check and make sure I don't have to work, and if I don't let me know what tools are needed, and I'll load up the old road box.

Well do . Dates are tentative to change due to weather. As we get closer I will keep an eye on the roads.

Night Eagle can not swing the 4th but he can do the following weekend. I would like to get this done ASAP but unless we have someone with experience it may not go well. @jgantzler do you have experience with pulling an engine? It seems easy but nothing ever is .

Baby Taco, Posted this on Wyoming BS, but here it is again. I have an engine hoist that is available for you to use for as long as you need to keep it. I'll even bring it to Laramie before you engine party. Let me know.

Awesome, I must have missed it. Any chance you would want to hang around for the fun?

Edit: Just saw your post. That's unfortunate but you are more than welcome to come out for the day and meet the guys.

Awesome, then if you are one board we can keep on planning for the 4th. I will be hosting a engine install party when all is said and done so if one of you can't make it for the tear down, plan for the install .
