Were you able to get this covered, or are you paying out of pocket? Yes, it is quite embarrassing. I hold the clutch in whenever I go by neighbors or co-workers. Sighh....

its covered under my 5/60k. I have 58,975miles, pretty damn close to being out of pocket. Well first off, i work in the parts dept, so getting things done is kinda easy, with legit claims. The sound is almost like a squeeky belt that goes away when you push in the clutch. The problem is in the T/O bearing and shaft that it rides on. The shaft is aluminum, and the bearing is steel, if you pop off the inspection cover (located on the drives side of the trans under the truck) with the truck running you'll see the bearing actually wobbling on the shaft (not normal), the real way to fix it is to get a new bell housing, but most dealer wind up throwing in a trans b.c its cheaper in labor.

first time complaint, your most likely gonna get just a T/o bearing (thats what happened to me about 15k miles ago), Now the noise is back. So we inspected the shaft while the truck was running as i said above and the service manager approved a trans replacement.

Well the trans came out today you can deffinatly move the T/O bearing up and down and wiggle it all over the shaft.. (sry it sounds perverted) It didn't get finished today bc we ran into a few rusted out bolts and whatnot, but tomorrow ill let you all know how nice and quiet it is

for the guy who asked: yes it does affects 5 speed also Proof: just had the problem with mine 2 weeks ago. I made a thread about it in the 4 cyl forum. They replaced the t/o no problem, but I hope it will not be a recurring problem. I asked the guys if my shaft was damaged; no. I also asked if they greased the inner side o f the bearing and they sais they did, with bearing grease. So let's hope it does not come back.

    Thanks for the heads up...

So all of you who are getting your transmissions replaced...
Has toyota actually re-designed or remedied this issue.. Or are they just slapping in the same old tranny in there which will lead to same premature failure in due time.

My 6spd is perfectly fine BTW, only have 16K on her though.... crossing fingers.

    .
Do you know if the new throwout bearing pilot shaft is still made of aluminum ? There have been some indications that a new design was going to include a steel pilot shaft.

To be honest it looks like the same thing, but the part number is different, it has changed somewhere.

NO TSB still, just go and complain and have them inspect it in the air with the inspection cover off... You'll clearly see the t/o bearning wobbling on the shaft
