The actual camping spots that I like are a couple miles away from the turn off to get to the trails FWIW and as many times as I go down there I have only seen people at the camp a handful of times. only reason is it has a closed gate and most people will just drive by but it is an open area for camping.

You are more than welcome to come along man as it is my bday weekend as well

Ahh ok... I'll keep that in mind... I appreciate the offer.

every time I've been there I've seen people camping, and honestly they aren't what bugs me... the traffic, and the gun fire does. I'm fine with people shooting, I just don't trust people shooting near where I'm sleeping. Last time I was there, granted over a year and a half ago, I watched people standing in their trucks shooting about 50 yards from Metberry's trail head. which I just came up, shooting over the top of the trail... that coupled with the abandon truck that was rolled off the trail and shot up... no thanks. I think my problem is that it's not easy to see where the trails head, and all the trails kinda lead DOWN from the trail head instead of up... so idiots are shooting out into open areas rather than INTO the mountain...

but idiots with guns is a discussion for another forum lol

Wanting to plan a trip to go wheel tincup pass so I can get my dad to shut the hell up about how insane of a trail it is and how cool his Ford Explorer is... It took him most of the day to do this trail and I am willing to bet that our Tacomas can do it in a few hours if that. Check it out on trail damage: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=120

No set date but I would like to get a taco group together... Anyone interested for later this year? Turn it into a mini camp trip, maybe some fishing?

Trail damages difficulty rating says that it's about the same difficulty as yankee hill (not hard)

Most of Tin Cup is not much more than a dirt road, but there is a small section of Old Tin Cup that is actually fairly challenging:

Also, that trail shouldn't take more than a couple hours, by the time you head up there, you might as well hit some of the other trails in the area. There's usually a good snow drift up there too, probably not passable until mid to late July this year.

There is a trip getting planned with some 4runner guys to do a big loop. BBP, engineer, ophir, and one other I can't think of. You are welcome to join. I may try to get sunshine and redcloud that trip...
I ran that trail last year. I would agree with the trail damage ratings on the south part. The north section is all washed out. The UTVs go screaming through there. You can make it as easy or difficult as you want. I was in my non lifted 4runner with 32s and only hit the trailer hitch once. I followed a toy buggy that found some ledges to play on.

Too bad what's left is so short.

    Definitely an easy trail

There are tons of trails above Tin Cup as well, lot's of old cabins to explore too. bit of history in that area. Alpine Tunnel isn't too far either and makes for a fun drive, minivan grade road but the views are great.

When did "old tin cup" close? Did that use to be a different trail that was maybe much more challenging? My dad is adamant that it was a very difficult trail

Jk, it's been that way long as I can remember, "old tin cup" trail is just a short section above Mirror lake, actually a short cut off the new main trail if you are properly equipped.

I climbed antero last year. If people wanted to cheat their way up a 14er that would be a good one.

Mid to late July? The snow stays up there that long?
