Apparently you need a license to operate. We've been using hams every time we off-road to talk to each other. So yea...

At the very end of Split Mountain. ....

And the directions seems to be wrong! We'll make a right onto Fish Creek Wash which is dirt. The Primitive campground will be on the left about 5 mins down.

you need a HAM license to transmit on any HAM channel. You really need some sort of license for any amateur channel except for MURS, FRS, GMRS at very low wattages on radios approved by the FCC. CB is one of the only unregulated bands but handheld CBs are hard to come by for cheap due to the power it takes to create a strong 11m wave and you need a long antenna to help that.

While it is not legal, I would suggest using fixed MURS frequencies when on the trails while in the middle of nowhere. 151.xxx and 154.xxx. It is legal to transmit on those bands while using a radio at .5 watts that is certified by the FCC. Most Baofang's power out to 3-4 watts, so it's way over. You'll kill any kids walky talky fun in the near area
