Mine was made a few inches taller to accommodate my spare in the bed...I'm super stoked. The quality is excellent and I can't wait to get a RTT up there and hit the road!

Nice work. I like the complex bends and tie downs.

You might look at augmenting your third brake light, though.

I had the guys at CBI make this custom Bed Rack for me.
The tent sits about 5" above the roof line so it doesn't create much drag, yet there is still enough height to be able to climb in the back of the truck.
It's also just high enough to mount the traction boards and hi-lift jack on the side. The three Rigid lights are there to light up the campsite and help with backing into campsites at night.

It mounts to the bed using the factory bolts so no weight is transferred to the bed walls so this thing is bomber. I've driven heavily wash boarded roads at 65 mph and this thing is super solid.

I like that rack and how it mounts. Although after a couple years with an RTT on my bed rack and tons of off-road miles I haven't seen any negative affects with how mine is mounted - on the bed rails. Is this really a big concern?

Look at PSU Taco85's build. He made one of his own for under $100 if memory serves

from my experience, there is definitely some increased drag when the tent is above the roof line. The biggest thing you'll probably notice is a very slight drop in fuel economy. Otherwise you really won't notice that its even there in most cases. The 4.0 in the Tacoma is quite a bit "peppier" than the inline-6 in my HEAVY Cruiser and when I have my tent mounted to the roof it's quite a bit more drag than most bedracks on Tacomas. I don't notice any real change in performance other than the slight drop in mpg that I mentioned.

Old thread I know but I'm trying to build one of these. I got a bunch of 1.5" ID aluminum pipe from a job site but no bender. I've recieved quotes from 4 shops in town and the cheapest one is $540. Apoarently this is tough stuff to bend! For that price I can just buy one already made. Any cheap tricks to bend this stuff?

Thats actually pretty cheap for custom fab in aluminum. Not to mention its a unknown alloy so bending and welding could effect the strength.. plus its a odd size so finding someone that spent $500 on a 1 7/8 die might be hard.

since everyone else posted there custom/homemade rack, so will I :D:D

Wanted to update this thread for those of you still looking for a RTT mounting solution. This rack is designed to fit ANY truck bed and is available in several different heights/widths. If you don't see a height you like on the website, contact us and we can make you whatever height you would like. It can mount to the Tacoma t-slot rails, or with the included clamps, or you can drill and bolt directly to the bed rails. Price is $550, powdercoat and shipping included!
