Thanks! If they say no on the recall... I have a pretty daunting welding project ahead of me to stop it.

Best of luck Cam! Anyone know why they wouldn't take it for the recall? If he's found holes and all why would they deny it?

The only cases I've seen denied involved the owner having pounded the shit out of their truck, or having deliberately sabotaged it.
A guy I worked with got his claim denied by Toyota due to 'owner negligence' because he had at one point tore both rear shock mounts out of the frame jumping it and done a pretty crude patch job with one of those cheap Harbor Freight welders.
The other claim I know of that was denied was on a truck that was sitting in the dealership when they were inspecting mine. Apparently that guy (according to the service manager at the dealership) had taken an angle grinder to his frame to accelerate the rusting process because his warranty deadline was almost up and he wanted a new frame.

So as long as you haven't done anything like that I'd think you would be all set, Cam.

Good luck! If they deny it, there was one company making frame plates for the rear of the truck. At the very least, maybe those would be a good template to start if you end up rewelding the whole back end back together. They were made as stiffeners for the LT trucks, but might work for what you'd be potentially doing also.

I don't want to jinx it, but upon first inspection they said it needs a new frame. Fingers crossed...

If they don't my plan is to take the cab off, cut out the bad part of the frame, weld in new plate, gusset the whole thing front to back, move the cab mounts back and add a couple other goodies... and por 15 the sucker...

If you want a drift monster... Take your bed off, replace with scrap 2x4 and pine planks... And stuff it in second. Holy... Pulling onto the highway was a little more fun than it is normally! A little more sideways too...

Should box the frame when you get a new one anyway.

It's the whole thing but a common failure point seems to be at the front of the leaf springs. The boxed part in the front would have me a little nervous also.

Well apparently it isn't rusted enough... Oh well. Good thing I'm a welder I suppose... I'm looking forward to ripping the truck apart in a weird way... Lots of ideas racing through my head! Because they couldn't make any new holes it isn't eligible. It's only really rusting bad by the front spring hangers... everywhere else is only surface rust. So I'm going to remove the gas tank, remove the cab, cut out the inner reinforcement which has rusted away... And weld on 3/16 plates to the outside and box the rear c-channel. I'll replace all the cross members, re-route the exhaust, and fabricate custom spring hangers because mine are really rusted... And bent! I tried to point out the frame was bending where it is rusty because the metal is so thin, obviously structurally compromised... But be that as it may, they need to be able to punch a 10mm hole through themselves apparently... For now I'll soak it in grease, and come summer I'll pull it apart. No moab this year... And a basement full of truck parts collecting dust. Crap...

Soo.... apparently one hole in the frame isn't enough to compromise structural integrity. Good to know, I'll have to keep that in mind for my next structural steel project. You're a lot calmer about this than I would be. That truck would be history with no chance of me ever buying another Toyota. A lot of Toyota's TSBs are infuriating to me, they seem to be 'solutions' for problems that never should have existed to begin with (ie. rear leaf springs, frames rusting out, throw out bearings, drive line vibrations).

Would it be worth trying a different dealer? That 'answer' they provided to you about why they aren't going to replace the frame has me pretty upset just reading it. Hole exists, but its still safe to drive more or less....that is BS to the highest degree.

I'm a little salty.. Of course I find the problem right after I pay it off. Maybe I can "find" a hole... This recall expires in March. I agree Mike, the frame should be rusty at all. Russian fucking pot metal... Thanks dana.

Maybe try another dealer? Doesn't seem like it'd hurt.

Problem is a Toyota rep comes and looks at it. Each dealer wants to make frames fail as its money in their pockets. From what I have heard the dealers used to fail everything and then corporate made very specific guidelines. I would make some phone calls to Toyota corporate or whoever and see if you can get a second inspection. Just curious what dealer did you go to?

    Morning all.

That sucks Cam. So is a sweet custom flatbed in the future then?

I really wanted to go to Moab this year too, but Rausch is now the best I can hope for. Money I had earmarked for a trip out west will now likely be used to modify our vehicles for an additional car seat and other related costs.
