Swapped out the LCA Cam bolts and took a few shots...

Here is a comparison of old moog and new OEM. The moog is simply a serviceable bolt with a flattened side and two cam "disks" that slide on. Whereas the OEM has the cam as part of the actual bolt assembly and the rear cam fits in place via two channels on either side. This is a MUCH stronger design.



The front bolts have a full sleeve with the integrated cam and the rear cam interlocks the sleeve as tightened. Once again MUCH stronger design.



The way the OEM ones are built I can't see this happening:



I did find one minor additional item to address. Found a weld drip & cleaned it up:

Just need to take it for an alignment later this week, throw the LCA skids back on & it will be trail ready.

Drove the truck to work today - alignment done. Steering wheel now straight. Just need to put on the LCA skids and t-case skid & I'm trail ready!

 

Prob such a good feeling!

Soon. Dropped it off at the body shop today to fix the hood alignment issue. I tried messing with it this past weekend and could not get it right.

 

Did you use all oem parts for the swap?

 

All but the little trim pieces under the headlights. I was originally thinking about an aftermarket hood but an oem one fell into my lap from a local Pa. member.
I got lucky.

Have to go pick up the truck this afternoon.

I remember when I used to work in the body shop and we would still use oem part even if the insurance company wrote for aftermarket because you would waste more time trying to get everything to line up. Even though my tailgate is aftermarket, the fit was good but the quality of the sheet metal is garbage.

 

Agreed - when I was first considering the swap the shop guys said the same thing.

 

Now with lined up body panels!
I'd say it looks 1/3 less like a jalopy at this point.

No worries. Carbide bit on the Dremel at 10,000RPM made easy work of it.

 

Super busy weekend... Between basketball games on Saturday with both kids and then a Cub Scout Camp-out at the Aquarium there was not a lot of extra time.

I was able to prep & complete half my current grill batch:


So after I swapped out to the OEM LCA cam bolts I went and got the truck aligned. Turns out, my guys were able to only get the camber up over 4* on the drivers side - the culprit being whooped bushings. So I pulled the "loaner" LCA's I've had on the truck that Ant so kindly gave me - this was back when I swapped out the whole front end with Jerry.

I got my Father-in-Law to press in some new OEM bushings into my oringinal LCA's that Jerry gusseted for my back then.

Went about swapping them back in and also replacing the brake pads while I was at it:

My problem for the day, the two 19mm bolts from the spindle to the LCA ball joint:


I killed myself breaking these suckers free... Needed to take a propane torch to the whole setup and then put all I could into it.

Getting used to working on a bit of a slant:


Back tires are chocked and jackstand & tire in place for backup.

LCA successfully removed!


Since I was fighting with the bolts & my back was killing me I didn't take many more shots but here's the Passenger side once it was all done:


I'll take it back this week to get it aligned again. The only thing left to do is install the LCA skids and t-case skid...

Hopefully I'll get the new shift boot from Redline soon - I'd like to have that final piece in place before heading down to SC in March.

 

Looks good, but your shock bolt is backwards. I assume Toyota installed them the other way to keep the bolt from interfering with the CV outer boot but it might be fine as is. I'd flex her out and make sure no interference just for good measure tho.

 

I just ordered a crawl box. Remind me to get some install pointers from you at Gulches. You're gonna be there, correct?
