What kind of gas you feeding your 3rd gen taco

Gas is cheap right now so 93

 

I experimented with this for 3 full tanks in various driving scenarios and did not register any improvement in my fuel economy from regular 87; not that I expected to...

 

87 Oct worked well in mine AND it's down to $ 1.38 a gal in Cincinnati!!!

 

On how many tanks did you perform your trend analysis and how many different driving scenarios? I find it hard to believe you could track a 1mpg increase as this is a very minuscule improvement which could have been affected by many other factors outside of Octane rating.

 

3 tanks each mixed driving and used a calculator not the truck

 

I am a loyal poster boy for Chevron gas. It kept all my cars fuel systems in good shape for over 40 years. I go out of my way to buy Chevron if I need to. Then I bought my Tacoma and the dealer filled the tank with what ever. Its new and the mileage around town was at 15 MPG. When I filled the tank for the first time with 87 Chevron my mileage jumped to 17 MPG right after filling the tank. Guess I am still going to be their poster boy.

 

Hahaha. Yes yes yes! The removal of the microscopic dirt particles increases MPG and horsepower. It's a fact! my best friends cousins husbands brother read it in people magazine.

If you sleep better at night with higher octane, fill er up. I fall into the OCD oil change group. I just feel all warm and fuzzy doing it every 5 grand. I don't think I could sleep if I waited to 10.
I am getting help for my issue. My therapist prescribed 10 shots of Patron daily with salt and lime. My liver isn't liking it but I am much calmer.

 

I took an exacto blade to all the air channel fins on the mirrors and fenders and air dam and I went from 15MPG to 19MPG mixed driving. It's a conspiracy! They're trying to force us to buy more gas to they can claim supply and demand to raise the fuel prices!!!!

Anyone got any more tinfoil? I just ran out

Where the heck are you guys getting non ethanol gas!?? Maybe a north east thing here but never seen it. I prefer to sneak onto the local Air Force base and fill up with JP4. So far security hasn't noticed the difference between my Sport and a F-16.

 

well, you cant get shell V Power with nitro in 87, and 89. it come only in 93.
oklahoma state have ethanol free gas. no front license plate required either.

 

Hmm pretty sure they sell this here in AZ with ethanol and it is 91 not 93 in AZ.

 

Around here where I live there have been a few places that carried non ethanol gas. However as more and more small engines have been ruined and gummed up and people started complaining more and more have offered non ethanol gas. In fact one place used to offer E85 back when gas was crazy high. It was a lot cheaper but people didn't realize that you get less mpg while using it. Also I'm sure a few people dumped it in their vehicles that we not certified flex fuel. I rarely ever gas there but stopped the other night. The converted that pump to pure gas and don't offer E85 anymore. Most of the gas around here has E10-15 mixed with the gas. I've used stablizer on all my small engines but I'm going to start just running pure gas. actually a few places around here now selling pure. I probably will continue running E10 in my vehicles but small engines I'm not going to risk it anymore

 

Ethanol has a lower energy density than standard petrol, meaning you have to burn more of it to make equivalent power. This doesn't mean you make less power running it, but it does means you get worse gas mileage. E10 fuel will be comparable to E0 in terms of efficiency since it's such a small amount of ethanol, but something like E85 you may have 60-70% (this is rough estimate off the top of my head ... but if someone wants me to do the math I'd be happy to lol) the fuel economy as pure petrol.

hmm, the engineer in me wanted to do the math, so here's quick comparison:
energy density (numbers vary depending on source, but this is from wikipedia, and other sources are within 10% of this ...)
petrol 32 MJ/L
ethanol 20.9 MJ/L

that means that ethanol you'll have about 2/3 the energy density (65.3% to be exact ...), so that is for pure petrol ... what about E85?

E85 = 85% ethanol, 15% petrol ... so equivalent energy density of 20.9*0.85+32*0.15 = 22.565 ... which would be 70.5% the energy density of pure petrol.

 

@JoeRacer302 just read your signature, hahahaha, I was wondering about @oneshort , hope he's doing all right. He needs to check in with us, hopefully he hasn't found the Diesel fuel mod yet

 

I only use non-ethanol in my motorcycles and other small engines (while I can still get it), but my cars and trucks use the 10% ethanol of the correct octane rated for that vehicle. The increased cost of ethanol free doesn't begin to get made up in improved mileage.

In my Mini, putting in 87 octane would kill the gas mileage compared to the 91 Octane it required. However on my Taco, it is the 87 octane. It may make you feel better putting higher octane in. But it actually doesn't help a bit, and all you're doing is making the oil companies richer. (They don't need the extra money, by the way)

I get gas at the lowest priced station for two reasons: 1) they are the lowest price, and 2) More importantly, the will likely have the freshest gasoline. That is important with ethanol as it goes south quickly. I don't subscribe to the argument that one brand is better than the other. The gas does come from the same refineries. Chevron, and others, do put Techron, or the equivalent, in their own brand. But I have gone 200K miles on several engines and never had the dirty engine problems that Chevron claims they prevent.

Another thing I have heard is that you don't want to buy gas while a gasoline truck is filling the station's storage tank as it stirs up the crap in the bottom of the tank. Not sure about that, but it's probably more likely to be true at a low volume gas station.

 

Higher octance fuels help clean your aystem. They also help reduce detonation (knocking) and pre iginition ( rapid explosions from heated carbon deposits). Sure they cost more but they do have their benefits.

Also filling up while the tank in the ground is bad because it stirs up all the dirt debris and rust in the tank.

 

I'm not saying you're wrong on all counts but are the new gas station tanks not plastic now..?

 

alot of tanks are still the old steel ones. Only newly built gas stations get upgraded. It costs over a million dollars to upgrade and clean up old leaks. So it isnt beneficial for the smaller stations to upgrade.
