Your looking at the small picture. It's not a matter of how much weight they are saving on ONE speaker. It's a matter of much weight they are saving across the entire vehicle. You figure if you have 8 speakers and save 2 ounces each speaker that's 1 pound. Obviously those numbers are just made up because I don't know the specifics just trying to give you an idea. Now you add up all those numbers and plus everywhere else they cut weight and it would actually add up to quite a bit.

Do you think it is a weight issue that Toyota is addressing or a cost issue? If they can save $5 per speaker x 6 speakers per vehicle = $30 per vehicle. Multiply that by tens of thousands built per year and you can see the real reason why Toyota is putting cheap speakers in their vehicles. It isn't a weight issue... JMO

JBL is an additional $700! Save your $ and spend it on an aftermarket system, instead.
For example, I hired a guy to install all of my old amps, EQ, and sub, plus a few LOCs and processors, keeping the head unit, for exactly $700.
Still, it's a lot of $, but a much better value.

Yes, the speakers are crap and will eventually have some distortion and blow out, just to be replaced with $300 more.
I doubt the JBL speakers are any better. Other forums, with pics, suggest they are just as lame.

I've had "reputable" shops do aftermarket audio work on previous vehicles and then shit starts rattling in the doors 2 or 3 years down the road, fasteners and clips are broken, plastic lining inside door was damaged and/or not reinstalled correctly. I'd rather pay $700 for the JBL than risk an aftermarket install job mucking up my truck interior. If you're THAT concerned that you want a pro system installed, leaps and bounds more powerful than the JBL system you probably will have to spend considerably more than $700 and there's still the fact that once you tear those doors off, pull carpet up, and run extra cables through your interior that something just isn't going to come out quite right as it did from the factory. Been there done that. Went with JBL.

^^^ this was pretty much the same reason I went with JBL. I'd done lots of installs for myself and friends. That said, for $700, the JBL sounds muddy to my ears.

To each his own. Too bad you can't find someone to do quality work.
I hate rattles and jiggles, too, and so does the guy I hired. Plus, he backs up all of his work.
I understand not everyone has this available to them, but for the $, the JBL is a rip off.

I felt insulted the moment I pulled out those "woofers" from the backseat area. For $700 I could have had a full high quality stereo upgrade. Pure junk.

Peace of Mind is invaluable. Once you start pulling a factory vehicle interior apart, it is like trying to put humpty dumpty back together again.

    For sure.

For a guy who has been all over and inside the Tacoma, it's very clear to me where Toyota cuts costs. I just finished repairing a door actuator. Stupid $0.10 piece of plastic broke internally, cost me 4 hours of my life to fix. They know certain components are going to last until you are out of warranty and then your own your own or pay out the ass for dealer to fix.

The stereo components are a huge insult to me. Oh well. I bought it for the 4x4 double cab locker, atrac, 1GR-FE, etc. and overall I've been very happy with my '09 :)

I agree. I can definitely tell where they cut costs just to raise their profit margin. The term "they don't build them like they used to" definitely applies to 2nd gens and forward. Which is too bad because if they actually had the things manufactured properly they would be a VERY solid truck. As for them cutting costs to allow the parts last long enough just to keep it outside of warranty, I would label that as Toyota being the new GM in the vehicle industry.

Those aren't woofers in the backseat... do a little research. pull the sub-woofer from behind the backseat and lets have a look at it.

What would you call those little bastards then? I was well aware that it probably wasn't correct terminology but internet that's why.

Per the website I'd call them 80mm mid-range speakers considering that's what JBL calls them in my 2016. Based on cone size I'd call yours mids as well. They ain't woofers.

Mid range huh? Well they aren't so mid range if they cease to stop working for no good reason and then start working the moment you touch the cone material again. Regardless of what they call them I still call them a fail. Lol.

I guess you blew them... Hey you live in Concord LOL... I'm in Pittsburg.

Is it possible you pushed them harder than they could take? How long had you had the truck when they crapped out on you (I see it's a 2012). Years ago I had a killer system in another car, left my kid in the car while I was in the store and she blew them for me.

I have the JBL and it sounds great, I am embarrassed to play music at a volume where the entire intersection can hear, so I don't need to waste money on aftermarket sound parts. Because seriously who are trying to impress? NO ONE CARES. And if I had kids in the car and you roll up blaring something with the F word in every other verse, I will personally show you how much I enjoy your music, with a giant smile on my face.

Maybe it's an age thing... by the time I hit my 50s I cared alot less about volume. For me the JBL system has decent sound quality and integrates my phone perfectly. And nice solid bass...
