Will a twin size mattress fit (and lay flat between the wheel wells) in the bed of a 2016+ tacoma with the tailgate shut? Specs say bed is 73.7" in length... twin mattresses are ~75" in length?

Mattress is 38" wide. Believe the wheel wheels are like 41.5-42 so should fit

If not cut 2 2x6's and put them in the slots and carry them above the wheel wells

What about lengthwise? Based on the listed specs the mattress will not fit since its a 73.7" bed (if that accounts for the lining) vs a ~75" mattress... Just wondering if anyone has actually tried this and could get the tailgate shut easily...

I'm sure you can compress a mattress an inch.

The guy I tagged has a twin mattress in his second gen long bed and it fits fine, and the beds are the same length.

The matress isn't going to fit. Leave the tailgate down and ratchet strap the matress down

An inch isn't much but I wouldn't stess the mattress, besides you could bend the tailgate or I've seen them pop off the hinge trying to jam them shut. I know the 3rd gen has a strengthened tailgate where the 2nd gens had issues with them bending. Just saying I wouldn't risk it

No tailgates were bent by a twin mattress being an inch too long.

@Iowa10 literally has a twin size mattress in his bed.

I just talked to him yesterday about it.

He hasn't killed anyone yet, and mentioned no issues pertaining to its fitment.

I don't think a mattress will bend it but he never mentioned if he's carrying a box spring. Try jamming the tailgate shut with that. He did say he wants it to shut easy

If he's just carrying a mattress worst comes to worse leave the tailgate up and throw the mattress in let it rest on the tailgate and strap it down. I don't understand what the big deal is, unless you have a cover and want it to be protected

Yea, this is pretty much what I'm getting at. Can't do the air mattress with my joints or that would be the easy solution. Don't need a box spring, just the mattress. And I need to be able to get the back shut with it in there. Still... if a picture is available at some point (of the mattress in the bed with the tailgate open/shut) ill know for certain. Thanks for the help so far tho guys.

Buy a chunk of high density foam from the foam shop. I have one for camping, it's 4" thick, cost me $80 and I've slept on it hundreds of time. Get them to custom cut it to length.

Of you can just get one of these. Really like mine. Blows up in a couple minutes. Sturdy fabric, and goes over fender wells. Airbedz.
