Hi Folks. I need to tow a 6x12 U-Haul trailer with my bone stock '16 TRD Off Road in a month and I'm not bright enough to know the correct ball mount drop needed on my new truck. I'm guessing a 4" for a level tongue but I might need the 2". Please chime in and educate me.

Hope this big blue beast will be big enough to tow a 2 axle trailer loaded up from west Texas to the Black Hills of SD.

Super rad but pretty far off budget. I wont likely tow often and I have no other vehicles that can. The Curt units are reported to be very good and reasonably priced. Thanx for the idea just the same.

I'd stick with the 2" drop. You will be suprised how much weight will add up on a 6x12 trailer.

For my Scamp trailer I need a 6" drop. My Scamp trailer is pretty low. I would start by calling U Haul and check what ball heigth you need for their trailer. I never rented from U Haul but have rented from another source and they would not use my ball mount. I was required to use theirs and return it with the trailer. It was included with the trailer rental. Might want to check out U Haul part number 10001m

Nope. Just a job change, taking on more of the household finances and getting the girl closer to her aging mom. She's been the breadwinner for 13 years and was very supportive when I needed to be closer to my mom. Now its her turn for me to step up and offer her the same. Thank you for your service.

I asked and they were clueless. They did offer to sell me a 2" drop for $30 but it was the only one on the wall so I didn't trust it to be the right fit.

Those Trimax's are definitely sweet, I have one on my work truck, but they obviously come at a cost that is hard to justify for the occasional hauler.

I have had this for the last ~5 years for my Tacoma, and it's still in great shape, I just don't leave it in the receiver unless I'm towing frequently. I realize it's a wannabe Trimax-type, but can you really go wrong for $25? Even less after you combine it with a 20% off coupon:

Very interesting. I don't normally trust HF for quality yet the reviews are strong. Where did you find this 20% off coupon? Never mind. Lowest drop is 5".

Here's one, they're always easy to come by online and in newspapers and magazines, and sometimes the cashiers even have them if you ask:

Why is that too low? Or what is it too low for?

Whatever you end up with, I'd also suggest this, thieves love U-Hauls:

I don't want to drag a loaded tongue on the ground with too low of a interface. If a 2" drop is suggested, a 5" drop would be potentially bad juju. Good idea with the lock though. Current plan is not to leave it unattended but you never know what will happen.

I measured and decided upon a 5 1/4" drop to pull my utility trailer.

    EB505413-40E5-4D9C-B836-1EFFFBF9ABEF_622c9666443ff09c6d33b76704fcbf9a024f186f.jpg

I have stock suspension and it seems pretty level but the trailer is empty. I do have about 130 pounds of weight in the bed.

The best thing to do is stop by UHaul and test it out.
I think when I pulled a Uhaul with my dads Titan last year, I was using a 4" drop and it was about right. I would guess the Tacoma is probably a little bit lower than the Titan.

I typically use a 4" drop on mine (stock TRD OR). It's worked perfect for about everything.

No trailer or truck is standard, that's why there are so many sizes. Set the trailer where it needs to be so that the load is being carried on its axles and measure the ball height. Be accurate. If you get it wrong, the load will be shifted on to your truck. The tongue weight shouldn't be more than ~500 lbs. My truck has a ~2" lift, and i use an 8" drop on my horse trailer. But I have a few draw bar sizes as well, for when I pull other trailers. They're all different. Bottom line is to let the trailer carry the load.
