need to carry extra camping stuff on top of camper shell with no roof racks

So I have a snug top camper shell on my truck and looking for ideas on how to carry stuff on top of it without a roof rack. any pictures anyone. I have a small kayak that I want to carry also. wonder if I tie them properly on top would work?

 

Why don't you get some roof racks? Is this just a one-time thing?

 

I dont want to drill holes on top of my camper shell. plus they not cheap

 

Well, having a set of racks is part of hauling things on top of your vehicle. It's a "you've gotta pay to play" situation.

Look at how smooth the top of that cap is. Nothing is going to stay up there, unless you have a ridiculous amount of straps. Which isn't really feasible, since you don't have anything to the strap to.

For the safety of you and everyone you share the road with, if you want to haul things on your roof, get some roof racks.

 

Get a roof rack for your truck... Don't have to drill holes that way

 

Trying to carry anything up there is eventually scratch the heck out of the shell, even with padding. Go for the roof rack. Or, a small trailer.

 

thats true, I dont have many places to strap to. any recommendations on low cost roof rack. that will work for me?

No. Drilling holes really isn't a big deal. I mounted my Thule racks myself. Just silicone the holes before you tighten the bolts. Mine has never leaked a drop, if that's what you're concerned about.

 

No. there are roof racks that go on the roof of your truck that don't require drilling. All the camper shell racks require drilling

 

There are multiple options you could pursue if you're looking to do it as cheaply as possible.

Standard Thule Load Bars are always a good option. That's what I use.

You could also search Craigslist or local junkyards for an OEM rack off another vehicle. Jeep Cherokee's have sturdy racks that mount on a sliding track, so they're adjustable. I'd be willing to bet you could pick one up for $50-100. They mount with five bolts on each side. I mounted a Cherokee rack on the hardtop of an old Wrangler I had and it worked awesome. I had considered mounting one on my Leer.

I will start looking. I was a little worried about leaks if I drilled into the camper shell but maybe its not much of an issue if i proper silicon.
