I've got a question about insurance rates. A little bit of background. About 2 years ago, I got in a small accident that ended up being a bigger deal than it initially looked to have bene. (I rolled into a tow hitch on a tow truck and knocked the radiator off the frame). The police came, looked at it and said there was no need to file a report cause all the damage that was done was to my truck and the rust on the tow trucks trailer hitch. So no report was ever filed with the police.

Now my actual question, would an insurance company be able to tell if I was ever in one since no report was ever filed with the police?

If they can’t tell, I can switch insurance companies and save a bunch of money.

Easiest way is to go to a broker and get a quote and see if they pull up anything during the process. If you don't like the quote, walk away.

Yeah, if you get a quote, when they pull up your information, they will tell you if you have anything on there or not. Regardless of if the police were involved and made a report, the main thing is if it was reported to your insurance company or the other parties and a claim was made. Then if it was found that you were at fault then your rates will be a bit higher. If you weren't at fault or they just said they don't know who did it, then it won't change your rates.

Insurance companies report to what's called "CLUE". If your insurance commpany paid out any money to fix your truck, it will be on record and any other insurance company will see it on the "CLUE" report.

Did your insurance company pay out less than $750?

Some insurance companies will charge you for an accident that shows up on "CLUE" regardless of fault, unless you can provide some paperwork showing that you were not at fault.

yea it was well over $750. I was at fault unfortunately. Thanks for the help. I guess it's probably best to just stick with my company until gets off my record in a few years.

What's the harm in getting other quotes now? It's still possible for another company to give you better rates even with an accident.

    True that.

Go to a broker. They work for you, not the company. They also rate through multiple companies to find you the best deal.

Just look out for broker fees, if you see one, argue to remove it, or at least reduce it.

A broker has the ability to not charge broker fees. We only charge them in my office is someone has multiple tickets/dui's/accidents and are being a pain in the ass.
