I liked Dam Neck best. The base was low profile and the chow hall was great. Other than that I was not around Norfolk much between deployments. It was a tough gig being a Marine in a Navy town.

Amen. Not only did it appear against the law for me (Air Force) to even be on a ship (calling it a boat the whole time), but I am pretty certain the powdered eggs were reconstituted with jet fuel.

What the fuck is a "officers only hallway?" I need in that room - that's where my crypto is at, and I'll be damned if I'm going the long fucking way around.

Thank God the marines were there - I had someone to hate the Navy with.

Thankfully I did not have to spend much time on the ships; just enough to know I did not care for it.

But holy hell those AF DFAC's. Damn they're good.

CONUS or Kuwait, they always eat better than we do.

The commander for USAF ROTC at school approached me the other day and really talked it up to me. It's hard for me to tell what he said was true and what was just him telling me what I wanted to hear.

Free school, opportunity to fly if you meet the standard, guaranteed job when you graduate, hell of a resume bullet. The cons are you might not get to be a pilot but still owe 4-8 years.

Not a guaranteed job anymore. A lot of the ROTC cadets I was mentoring ended up being offered National Guard positions because Active Duty commitments were full. A few didn't even get that. It all depends on degree + demand. Engineers are always in high demand. Engineers who can fly are at a huge advantage. Computer scientists with experience in defense and penetration (be still your dirty minds) also rate highly - there is a "robust" cyber operations environment for those with no convictions. Still no guarantees, though. They're drawing down like everyone else.

Yes, because those pilot fuckers are experts at breaking planes. "Whaddaya mean 'no 4-G turns?' I barely stressed it!"

Yeah I'd love to join the AF or Air national guard to fly, but since it's not guaranteed I really don't want to get stuck with a commitment and not fly. That would put me really far behind with airlines

My wife's uncle has been flying professionally for 30 years and he was never military. Started small and just kept slogging away ay his hours. He flies a Cessna Citation Bravo for an oil group currently. Making good $$, but he's also 60.

Try the Navy or Marine Corp, they will guarantee flight school. Plus less chance of ending up flying a school bus.

That's what I'm doing now. I'm just drawn to the military for some reason. I'm not really sure why
I'd have no problem flying a school bus. I would not want to get stuck on a boat, so I haven't given the navy any thought (even though they have the most pilots of any of the branches). Will the Marines really guarantee it? They didn't for my cousin.

I'm not an expert but from what I've seen and heard the Marines work the same way the Navy does with regards to officer accessions. But Marine pilots will spend almost as much time on grey things as Navy pilots.
