Plenty of "rubber" materials that will handle exhaust temps all day long.

Could the heat shields be removed from the exhaust and attached to the firewall?

The few that have been removed completely are mounted underneath the cab and not directly to the exhaust

I drove a 2015 4Runner the other day and the gas pedal, steering wheel, floor were smooth as glass upon acceleration and idle. Not any vibration/feel or noise coming through to the cabin at all. It really made me wish I had test drove the 4Runner before deciding on the Tacoma. It made me realize just how bad my Tacoma feels. It is not a characteristic of the truck - it is a flaw - and it must be fixed.

Just to make sure I'm not the only one experiencing this "additional" symptom...but is anyone also feeling vibration in the steering wheel upon deceleration?

I've been having this in addition to the pedal vibration (accelerating and decelerating).

I recall some other folks confirming but just wanna make sure I'm not the only one.

Indeed. I've test driven other Toyota models and it really puts into perspective how uncharacteristic this is. I hope you've sent your feedback to Toyota.

Yes, you're not the only one. On deceleration I do have the vibration but it's at a lower frequency and feels a little different. I also hear a droning sound. Sometimes the vibration pulsates. It's very odd.

I really hope someone figures out a fix for this before my Tacoma arrives in 6 weeks. Otherwise, I'll be checking out 4Runners and doing a last second switcheroo.

@MannyMan thanks for the quick feedback, I appreciate it. I've been noticing the vibration is stronger in the steering wheel upon deceleration versus acceleration (although both are strong enough for any normal person to notice).

The gas pedal vibration is really strong in mine at this point and numbed my calf on a recent ski trip. The drive was only 90 minutes one-way and I had to constantly move my leg around for it not to go to sleep on the highway drive. I really hope this is addressed by Toyota because this is a major safety issue imo.

I can attest to the drive train vibration felt in the gas pedal during acceleration between 1800 and 2400 RPM. Started about 2200 miles. Getting progressively worse. Feel it in the steering wheel, and floor boards. I drive 500 miles a week. Steering wheel is now drifting and I now have a rattle somewhere in the front end. I heard about this issue and I was careful to test drive the truck before delivery and [vibe] was not there. It develops over time. To confirm this, I test drove a 4x4 V6 AT the other day with 4 miles and it did not have the vibe. Hope this is fixable and I have never experienced this in any vehicle. Regretfully, I now have a vehicle that I dread driving.

Update: Vibe is now felt at 1200 RPM, anytime the truck is in gear and under load.

My condolences friend, I very much sympathize with your dread. I find myself also shying away from having to drive, and am quite saddened by it.

Thanks for the support - who would believe this from a Toyota product?

Is this issue thought to be more widespread on autos? I've only seen one or two mentions of someone with a manual having the vibrations. Obviously, there are way more autos out there to begin with.

Just doing a quick scan through the topic, it also looks like there are very few reports from Off Road owners.

That's interesting how it's stronger in the wheel for you on deceleration. I certainly notice it changes in tone and character in the wheel when I decelerate. After experiencing it on a few highway trips I said to hell with that on the highway. So I hear you (and @Doobiewah) on that front. I've reverted to splitting my time between the Limited for city and my daughter's old Camry for city and highway (215,000 miles and still going strong). And when I can steal my wife's new Highlander, I do for city and highway.

I also empathize with you. Same boat with my Limited. I never felt a thing until it slowly developed after I took delivery. I’ve bought so many Toyota’s over the years and never had a single issue with them new. Tundra, Corollas, Camrys, Highlander, and RAV4. So I never thought twice when I forked over the cash for a top-of-the-line model and took it home.

It’s such a beautiful truck otherwise. I am doing my best to be patient, as this seems to be growing and becoming hard for Toyota to ignore now. Hang in there. Also thankful to @busticator and @Danielnc06 for the experimentation. Gives me hope that this may be an easy fix we can do on our own.

My issue seems to be connected to the exhaust. I don't know about the transmission. About 10 years ago, Toyota had this issue with the 4 Runner. The fix was a counterweight on one of the drive shafts. It is most certainly not "normal" to experience this. Vibrations put wear on bearings. A master tech I talked to suspected it " certainly an engineering problem. I would guess something to do with the driveshaft support bearing or length of the driveshaft."

The vibration in the steering wheel is more of a pulsating feeling and begins when the vehicle starts to decelerate around 35-40 mph. No braking at all, just taking my foot off the gas. Oh and I too, sometimes hear a deep droning sound thats barely audible but its there (infrequent though).

Hopefully me describing this feeling, resembles some others since most of the talk has been about the vibration on acceleration. And I hear you on trying to switch vehicles to drive when possible, unfortunately this is my only vehicle. I definitely miss my old Pathfinder that had 125k miles on it and no vibration at all.

The Toyota rep on the phone who I've spoken to twice on the phone was very polite and admitted that she's had a "few" other people call in about it and they're watching this. I'm remaining optimistic that Toyota will release a TSB for this, just no clue when. After doing some Googling (looking in particular for the amount of TSB's released for the Tacoma)....I came across a cumulative summary for the Taco (below). All we can hope for is that if/when they do release their first TSB - it will address our problem (they gotta release one sooner or later).
