The trailer hunt begins (once my budget recovers). A buddy of mine has an all-options 2009 Jayco Baja 10Y for a good price, but I just can't swing it. I got some of my front landscaping redone since I am doing the rear which really ate into my truck/trailer funds. Sacrificed the trailer haha, but worth the investment!

With how I camp it should be fine. 200-300 miles each way, dirtbike for the rocks and jumping dunes and occasional fire road duty. No problem - I'm not taking it up John Bull or over the Rubicon haha. After extensive searching for their capabilities, I'm convinced this will go everywhere I need it to go. Also opposed to what most people believe - you can service them at home as well for your basic maintenance.

    2008 Mercedes GL320 CDI.
It was that or a 2005-ish Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD and I've had 3 Jeeps and two Mercedes before so I'm familiar with the costs of operating each.

Thanks. I'll likely camp the hot springs next weekend.
For some reason, my girlfriend didn't want to take my 2000 Toyota Corolla commuter car with bald tires back there loaded down with gear and dog...:cookiemonster:

Thanks, I've read all the issues from oil coolers to airbags to rear door hatches. Having had a C55 AMG monster, you realize that even though it's highly controlled by electronics, parts are still parts and still come apart/bolt on the same way, albeit more expensively, so I should be able to troubleshoot and repair any small things at home. While I won't be charging 65mph over desert whoops anymore, this truck will still go to the same places I like to go. And the other 95% of the time I drive on pavement will be nice.
I drove the 2007 GL450 and it's sweet, but might as well get the diesel for the same price. They're unfortunately hard to find for a reasonable price in CA since they weren't originally sold here due to emissions. They're actually tough to find for a reasonable KBB price across the country. They're all a few thousand over blue book for the diesels.

The final consideration was space. I have a bunch of friends without SUVs. Now I can take them camping with us. Bunch of friends visiting from out of town? We can all take one car somewhere. It's also big enough in the back with the seats down to sleep 2 back there.

Edit: Need to carry something big that won't fit in a SUV? My neighbor has a small flatbed trailer he said I can take any time.
Dirty dogs? Weathertech makes a hard cargo mat for carrying my firewood and dirty dog paws combined with a pet barrier to keep them in back. While most people would balk at something like that done in a Mercedes, just remember that it's still a truck. Mercedes cars are taxis in Europe - not regarded as super fancy like in the US.
