GPS mount perfect, complicated

I finally found my perfect GPS mount..
It's complicated, take notes ..got a 10" mini usb cord and a rubber band.. I hope my pics are clear...
Band goes around ashtray and gps port /cord... This attachment holds really well.. And no dangling things..or suction cups falling off.. BTW, my USB charger supports 2 x 2.1 amp

 

Looks good. I need something like that too. It would be nice if you would post back after 100 miles of off-roading and let us know how sturdy that installation is. Also, it looks like the installation could use something to keep the top of the display from rocking against the radio's bezel, or from falling forward into the shifter altogether.

 

I tested the setup for several hundred miles in real time use... Just drove normally... Unit never got out of balance or shifted atall.. The unit perches itself w/out the rubber band pretty well except hard right turns... The rubber band is solid, really.. It doesn't rock, shift etc... Nothing.. Plus the band is completely hidden

 

I remember those things. I used them all the time in new towns I'd travel to. Sadly, technology is slowly making them obsolete. You can basically say what you're looking for into your smart phone and it'll show you the way. My only gripe with those units is after a few updates, you've paid more than you did for the unit itself.

 

Maybe but idk bout all that really ... Gps so cheap... And they have life time maps.... Screen bigger, more info,,, on and on
But phones are fine too

 

So I just spent the last few days trying to find a perfect setup for a phone mount (mainly to use as gps). I wanted to make sure it wouldn't cover up anything important like the cd player or the hvac controls and was planning on trying to get a mount to attach where the passenger airback switch is (on my 02 it's just a blank slot). But then I found this:



Made by Panavise part #75137-999. It's kinda spendy for a metal bracket, but for $30 I wasn't going to try and make my own. It attaches with screws to the cd player bracket screws so it's super solid. I then bought a 17mm AMPS adapter plate with a 17mm ball on it:

Should be a really nice setup that doesn't block anything and is super sturdy. Jump in my truck, snap my phone into the mount and off i go. It'll charge wirelessly while streaming music via bluetooth. All the pieces should arrive early next week and I was going to post once I have it all setup.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that there was almost no talk about this piece on here. It's a bit spendy but it's something most of us use a ton in our trucks. I have a note 5 now but might be switching to the s7 edge but it'll fit in this setup just the same.

 

Parts came in today and I'm super happy. Easy to install and it's really steady and solid. The wireless charging seems to be just powerful enough that I can stream music via bluetooth with the screen on constantly and the battery will stay put which is all I usually care about. If i'm really in need of a bit of a charge I'll just connect it directly do the fast charge outlet and get topped off. Pic here:

I made a custom dock for my iPhone where the airbag switch goes. I used a swivel from proclip and 3d printed the rest. I'll try to get some pictures of it.
