E-locker light flashing...but both tires still spinning?

I have been having problems with my locker for a few months. When I hit 70mph+ the rear end starts howling like crazy.

Last night it rained and I tried to engage the rear locker. Of course, the flashing light came on the dash...nothing new. I went onto a dirt path and spun the tires, and to my surprise both tires spun. I tried a brake stand and again, both tires spun. The left tire spun first, then the right tire about half a second later at the same speed.

My question is: Why is my dash light flashing if both my tires are spinning? Is it safe to assume that my e-locker is functional? I have the TRD package, 01 Prerunner, so I doubt it has an LSD (which is what it felt like to me)

hah yup prerunner...and obviously I didn't drive 70mph+ on a dirt path with the e-locker engaged!

 

Driving in the rain or snow with the elocker engaged is not a good idea. It makes it real easy to spin the truck around.

 

I am hugely disappointed.

I swapped the fluid just a 2 months ago. The sound calmed down a bit but not much as I used a heavier weight oil. Couldn't see any discernible metal flakes in there unfortunately. I thought it might be the diff bearing making the noise, but we swapped it out and no luck.

And just to clear things up, i wasn't driving in the rain with the e-locker on. I took advantage of the wet dirt paths to engage the e-locker, spin the tires for a few feet, and take a look at the tracks and tires to see which ones were spinning.

 

So, were you driving at 70+ with the locker engaged? If so, why and what were the conditions?

 

Not at all. I simply said that I start hearing noise at that point from my rear end. To test, I was parked in a dirt parking lot and did a 5 foot sprint to see if I could see both tires spinning.

I have found a 3rd member that I am swapping in on Wednesday! Is my current one worth anything? It only needs new gears

 

Ahh. I was a bit confused there. Sounds like a bearing to me.

 

Thats what I thought but we had the bearing replaced...and no luck! It's definitely coming from the rear end though because I lifted the back end and had someone get on the gas so I could locate the sound with stethoscope and it wasn't coming from the axles

 

Could be a carrier bearing. Could also be the ring and pinion, but I would think that you would hear that noise at all speeds as well.

 

Yes it comes with the motor and wiring. The one I'm buying has those included so presumably I'll have mine

 

e-lockers are only rated at like 5mph arent they?

 

Ill give you a hundred bucks for your third w/ all the wiring, motor etc..
