And how will you take out the pin if it bends from pulling in the middle? It may work in many cases, but I don't think the pin is meant for this kind of pull.

 

Probably just end up grinding it off, but I've always done this and never had issues. 100+ times in the past 7-8 years. I'd imagine it'd take a massive amount of force to do this considering these pins will tow 20,000+ lbs.

 

I've also done it many times pulling out 3/4 ton trucks attached to large trailers out of the sand.

 

The pins are made for pulling Class 3-5 trailers. They are rated for a hell of a lot. More than necessary for yankin out a taco

 

Was just about up post up that the front factory spots aren't real tough

I would like to get a shovel to take with us on wheeling trips. Maybe some recovery boards?

 

I went with almost exactly what you have, but prioritized shovel and recovery boards higher. I have always loved bully tools for shovels and maxtrax, but there are definitely cheaper alternatives out there.

 

I still need to get a compressor (not sure just yet but I'm open to suggestions), deflator and some traction boards. I'll get a hi-lift jack once I get my sliders.

So far I have a recovery strap, reciever hitch d-ring, shovel, axe, first aid kit, jumper cables, d-ring shackles.

Down the road I want to get a front plate bumper to mount a winch, just don't have the money for it right now.

 

For the air compressor, I have this one. Maybe wait a few weeks, it was 58 dollars 2 weeks ago when I bought it !

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep a lookout for the compressor to drop back down before I buy it. How is the compressor/deflator working for you so far? Can you take a couple pictures on how you mounted the mudflaps? I have the oem ones now but I don't want to damage the truck ripping them off.

 

I only took pictures of the rear inside. The front is similar but the extra screws go farther in due to the extra area to screw into

 

Regarding use of just a hitch pin and tow strap, minus any kind of shackle or hitch link. I've done it in a pinch but I've also seen a damaged pin. I wouldnt want to snatch anyone out with just a pin, they're not designed or rated to be used with soft straps, you gotta use a hitch link or the like to maintain those ratings.. Just in case anyone new to this is reading.

 

One thing I've always kept in my Jeep is a nice heavy fabric tarp (not plastic...fabric- like a canvas tent wall); while it serves obvious purposes as a tarp...I also lay it over the recovery strap closet the vehicle being pulled. I started doing this after watching a guy do the same when pulling a vehicle with a questionable tow hook...the hook broke...it was loud...and the fabric acted as a big wind break and absorbed most of the energy. Will it always work perfectly like that? Doubt it...but it was convincing enough for me to do the same.

That was a great video, thanks for sharing. In all their testing they were using mass or extra straps. No solutions using air resistance were tried. Not that I'm saying it would have worked (or not), but it would have been interesting to see the comparison.
