No no and no, the check plug is for checking the level of the fluid. The fill plug is on the tail stock near the end of the trans (towards the rear of truck). You fill through the fill plug and then open the check valve and wait for it to dribble out then it's full, but only when the trans fluid is at the correct temp. Read that link that was posted, it's all in there. Just don't listen to @127.0.0.1 he is wrong.

I've checked for the fill plug in that location. Never saw it. Is it hiding?

My first thought upon reading the title was, does he mean the transfer case plug? Cause the plug for the 4X4 trany is the same as for the non 4X4 trany. Just thinking out loud and hoping you add fluid to the right hole. No pun intended - yeah, right!

No, I meant tranny. I've seen pictures of it on the 4x2s but I guess with the added t case its hidden. The few minutes I was under there I couldn't find it

Not really, but two things. The head on the plugs are thin. I had an extra socket and grinded down the edges so it catches the head better. Adding the fluid is a PIA - gotta use a pump on the AT trany. If filling the transfer case, I believe there was room to tilt the bottle using a tall quart bottle.

I just checked my 4X4. Passenger side, straight up from the trany cross member. It does sit up high but easy to remove with proper combination of extensions.

Edit: but I have a 4-door long bed; that could make things look a bit diff down there. Do this, from rear end of trany pan, it is about three-five inches to the rear and on the side, above the exhaust line.

Ok thanks guys. I plan on using a drill pump to pump the fluid in, should make things a little easier. (I hate those damn bottle pumps)

I use this one, Milescraft # 1313. Was $12 on Amazon when I bought my first one. Just got a second one as backup for $8. Love it. I've only used it for ATF; don't know how it would handle gear oil.
