Frame rust recall

I'm curious if they installed the 6 rectangular plastic plugs under the front wheelwells of your trucks frame, when they did the LSC (3 on each side), like all the newer Tacoma trucks come with? I know that they keep dirt/salt out of the interior of the frame and they wouldn't be installing them on newer Tacoma frames for no reason.

 

Did they give you any type of extended warranty on the frame?

 

What I don't understand, is that if you have a 2004 Tacoma frame that was treated with CRC, your frame is warrantied till 2019. If you own a 2005-2008 Tacoma frame treated with CRC, made by Dana just like the 2004, you have no warranty if it fails inspection 2 years after the LSC.

 

I was under the understanding (from different posts made by other members) that there was a warranty on the CRC frames. Lately I've been reading posts from you guys saying the opposite. I guess if it were me, I would verify (if you haven't already) with the dealer/Toyota that you do, or don't have an extended warranty.

If no warranty, I would be putting the truck up for sale as soon as I knew it was getting CRC'd. I might even trade the thing in when I came back to pick it up.

 

I made a point of asking the service manager, after having the LSC performed and he stated, "there will be no extended warranty like the older Tacoma's received, but if you do have a problem later we will see if we can do something for you".

I was hoping if I keep on top of the corrosion, with fluid film/washing it might extend the life of the frame. If this truck doesn't last as long as my previous Nissan truck which I didn't maintain the frame half as well, I don't think a Toyota truck will ever be looked at again, when buying my next truck.

 

That wouldn't give me the warm and fuzzy.

There's a lot of "If's", and "Might's" in those last couple of sentences. Not trying to discourage you, but if it were me, it would be in the process right now.

Maybe your frame is an anomaly, but I lived in Mass most of my life, and now live in N.H., and both states salt the fuck out of these roads. Like many of you, I washed the undercarriage as much as possible, and I thought my frame actually looked pretty good for a 10 year old truck. But it failed in the same spot everyone's fails. The inside vertical section by the cats. By all appearances, it rusted from the inside out.

I guess if you keep it, keep your eye on those spots. If you haven't already, look through this thread. It's loaded with pics of that spot.

I've said it before, this truck is the best vehicle I've ever owned hands down. But if I can't count on the frame lasting 10-12 years, and then being shit out of luck, than I doubt I would ever get another one myself.

When I had my frame replaced last month I had them install the frame plug kit your referring to Campaign #173 Pg 24~26 shows where they go. Toyota part number 04002-07104. Comes with about 24 plugs.

 

I'll take a look tomorrow.

They didn't say anything, and I didn't get anything in writing.

I check those areas every time I'm under my truck.
I would think if they inspected and passed it, and 6mos. down the road it breaks they are on the hook. And they know it.
That said, they did a curtesy inspection and I noticed several things on there they did not check or do. And they indicated they brought the tires up to 35psi, door jam says they should be 29psi.

 

Found out on Thursday that my frame was at the dealer, I spoke with the tech and he has done over 200 frame swaps so I am less nervous than I was about it. I am heading back today to take more pics, he said he should have the body off this morning.

 

Looking forward to more pics! How long have you been waiting for the new frame? I see your truck was already lifted, are doing any new parts?

 

Honestly, you are in MA which means when it fails it will become expensive garden ornament. I would either get new frame or ditch it before you can no longer sale it.
But that just me...

 

Here are some pics of it torn down, the only thing I had them install was a new set of light racing UCA's. The drivers side needed new bushings so I figured it was just easier to do it that way and then just sell the old ones once it is finished.

 

That's an interesting use of the lift....

Hey can you elaborate on this a little more please? I just had my frame sprayed a few days ago and I asked about if the holes( pre-made not rust) were going to be covered to prevent any moisture from getting inside the frame any further. They said no. I thought about doing this myself cause it just makes sense

 

I know this sounds bitter, and I am. But this whole CRC thing is bullshit. Mine is flaking off, toyota won't do anything. If I were to trade my truck in they would probably just replace the frame themselves for resale. So either way I'm not going to come out with any money towards a trade. I agree with Fitz235, this is one of the best vehicles I've ever owned for me and my family. Oh well!

 

The motor hanging from the lift... interesting...

So many different techniques used for the frame swap, I would think Toyota would have a bulletin of exactly how this job should be performed.

 

That's what I was thinking .... This looked slick to me.

- Remove Bed
- unbolt body.
- lift body about 4 feet?
- slide frame back under lift
- Disconnect Engine and Tranny - Attach to lift
- Lift engine
- Slide out Frame / swap frame parts to new frame.
- Slide in new frame assy under list
- Reverse steps 1 through 6

IT does tie up the lift but does standardize the process and repeatability with an eventual reduction in time required.

 

Same problem here. Coating was on for 13 months when I noticed it was starting to peel off. You can even see the rust coming through the coating where the welds are.
Called Toyota corporate and received the shaft. They also explained that if a hole develops in the frame at this point there is nothing they will do about it.

 

I asked the tech about it, and this is exactly what he does. He solely does frame replacements at the dealer, and It allows him to do it with minimal help from others. He did say there were other ways he has seen it done where they would brace the body and leave the engine right in the front end when they pull it off of the frame, it saves a bit of time but he thought it is too much weight on the body so he doesn't do it that way.
