That's a good looking Tacoma. Usually not a fan of the factory roof rails, but that darker color makes it work.

Ok guys need some mechanical input again. So yesterday the truck was blowing white smoke for a minute so I pulled over and checked my fluids, all fine. Then it wouldn't start and just clunked. Cleaned my leads on the starter and then it barely turned over and died. Then I got it to turn over again barely and it stayed on. The smoke was gone the whole way home but it was idling super low and had no power what so ever. I'm getting tired of fixing this truck and this may be the last straw. Battery voltage was 13.4v and as I said, all fluids good and no visible leaks.

Normally I'd say white smoke = steam, and that you're having a head gasket issue. If it were a light blue I'd call it oil, which could be rings or valve stems, but that's something that would be repeatable, and wouldn't come on all of a sudden.

Something causing it to get way too much fuel maybe? Start it up this morning when it's cold and see if you get the smoke to come back.

And while it's running, after the thermostat opens up look for bubbles in the radiator. Take the cap off before you start it so it doesn't pressurize.

Where was the smoke coming from? If it came from the tailpipe, I would guess it might be a fuel issue. Is the any sugar around your gas fill? How do the sparkplug wires look?

Go to auto parts store and rent / borrow an OBD reader to see if it's throwing any codes.

My $.02 is it sounds like a stuck PCV valve.

I was thinking possible head gasket as well I'm gonna try and run compression tests tomorrow

Exhaust. Also sugar? Not sure what you mean. I haven't checked the spark plugs yet but I've got a new set lying around I'm gonna put in today I think

Yeah I'm gonna have the codes read here soon to see if anything is logged. PCV valve?

I'm not too familiar with engine mechanics at the moment, still learning. Trans and suspension is where I shine lol.

I was half joking about the sugar, but you never know. With the fact that our gas caps don't lock, however, it is possible for mean people to pour bad things, like sugar, in our tanks.

If a sparkplug or cable went out, then you would not be running on all cylinders. Had this happen in an old Pontiac once. Hope you get this figured out.

Right but its not missfiring nor is there any dash lights on. Also correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that'd produce white smoke

Any chance it could be the catalytic converter?

Your still gonna run fine on 5 cyl it will just sound like shit. And have alot less power. Don't see why it would smoke.

PCV= positive crankcase ventilation valve. It's a little junky thing about the size of your finger. After time, they can build up residue and either stick open or not seat, allowing crankcase gasses to bypass into your intake. Symptoms are hard start, lumpy idle, stalls or low power at throttle tip in., runs rough.

still, fastest, easiest diagnosis is get an OBD reader and see if there are any codes.

Edit- it's located drivers side about 1/2 way back, hose coming from throttle housing.
Lest I lead you down the wrong diagnosis path, best to check the codes 1st.

Just fired it up. Idling ok and exhaust smells a little gas rich. Got very little smoke for about 10 seconds.

    Gonna go get codes read

If you're blowing white smoke any time Other than start up you should run a compression check.
