Yup, there's a reason sports cars run low pro tires.

I have a question related to this. If the 2wd can have the locker, why do those with the 4x4 have to have it in 4LO to use the locker?

for the purpose of camping, exploring, getting to desolate hiking trails once in awhile, I'm assuming the off road 4x2 will do the job. If you're purposely going offroading or live in the snow I'd get 4x4

One word, "Options". Some people don't need 4x4, but don't want the hood scoop(Sport), have no desire for leather
( Limited), but want those extra features the SR and SR5 don't have. I am willing to bet about 40 percent of TRD OR trucks never leave the pavement.

I think more than that .....Probably 80% keep their trucks on smoother pavement.

Unless the reason you have 4x4 is mostly for snow conditions

Hence the 80%. I bought 4x4 because of the vastly I proved handling in snowy/icy conditions. In most of the slippery off-camber summer situations I get myself into, a locker would be fine n dandy!

95% of taco owners wouldn't capitalize on the benefits of a 4x4 with a locker. That's really only usefuly1 for serious wheeling.

exactly the point everyone is trying to make. Most people with a 4x4 OR wouldn't venture off to your spots

Gotta agree with OP, in my opinion a "TRD Off Road" truck isn't really an "off road" truck unless it's 4WD... and if you think 2WD with a locker is good enough for off road, you're not going far enough off road. lol. I've always heard "you might not need 4WD often, but when you need it, you'll REALLY wish you had it". Went to the mountains last storm and 2WD trucks were sliding everywhere, but I just cruised right around them as they're sliding backwards into the car behind them. And don't try the whole "Prerunner" speech, I'd say 1 in every 100,000 Tacomas get built into a capable desert prerunner... TRD Off Road 4x4 is ready for some pretty serious crawling right off the dealer lot.

Or maybe I'm just bitter because I spent a couple thousand more on the taco and I gotta drop $4k on a suspension system. lol.

This pretty much sums up the argument for 4x4. lol. If you can spring for the 4x4, you gotta go for it. The ease of lifting the truck on 2WD is nice, but it won't matter cause you can't even off road with it anyways.

Not sure why the 4x2 Off Road package is always attracts so much confussion. There's a market with legit application.

Not all of us live in regions that require full off roading capability. In my 20+ years of driving I've never had a need for 4x4.

If everone had a 4x4 truck the debate would be why there are so many 4x4 owners that would never use it and just mall crawing posers.

I liked the looks and the comfort over the sport. That simple and not ashamed to admit it.

My truck gets used primarily for hauling home improvement supplies as well as my daily driver.

I did go out to dinner on Friday and the parking lot was packed so I jumped the curb and parked on the island in the parking lot. Thank gawd for the OR package to make that possible. Too bad I didn't take a pic to post in the asshole driver thread.
