They are both great choices. I don't know of any major problems with the 1st gen trucks. FWIW, I wouldn't trade my 02 for a 06.

The only problems with the 1st gens - is the frame rust issue and 15 year warrantee toyota put out on them. If you're looking for an 02 - you gotta be very careful to inspect the frame carefully and have a toyota dealer inspect it before you commit to buying.

If you find a good one that passes toyota's inspection - then you'll wonder how long it will last versus how long you want to keep the truck. Will Toyota still give 150% KBB value in 5 years if the rust gets bad?

IMHO, I think the first gens are a stronger vehicle. I beat mine like it owed me money, and it never coughed. I think they are the same comfort, just a little less elbow room. :)

    x3 i'll die first :D

the frame rust issue is from 95 to 2000...the 01+ dont have the extended rust warranty because there hasnt been a problem found

now then...i dont know what "people" youve been talking to...but if im not mistaken theres been more TSBs/recalls etc on the 05+ trucks than the 95-04 trucks

the only major issue that theyve had are the rust issue on the 95-2000...past that...on the 01-04 at around 90K your water pump will prob need replacing...but thats about the same with most vehicles...

someone correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure that the only major recall/tsb/etc on the 1st gens is the rust issue and thats not even on all of them...just a majority of the 95-00

the 2nd gens have already had major recalls on the accelerator, tailgate, and rear springs

im not trying to turn this into another 1st v. 2nd gen argument...just helping the OP choose the best truck for his money...either way he's getting a toyota and he'll be better off...

The 1st gen interior is cozy, not cramped. There are luxuries available such as leather, VSC (04' only) and it's one tuff truck. I hauled 1500lbs of bagged gravel in the bed of my 02'. It was squating down a bit, but, took it like a champ! I'm not knockin' the 2nd gen, just speaking what I know.

i just remembered a recall on i think 01/02 trucks but im not positive on the years...

we had some ball joints fail and they needed to be replaced/fixed

mine fell into this category and i had no issues getting it fixed

I didnt have that issue- the only recall I had was for them to install a gas filler neck shield for explosion safety in a collision.

i guess now the 1st gens and 2nd gens are about even on major recall

best bet is for the OP to drive both options and pick the one he feel's most comfortable with...either way he'll be getting a damn good truck

A good truck is a good truck, find one you like, have it looked at by a dealer or a good wrench, I'll bet you be happy with either choice.

At least it's your GF and not your wife.;) Anyway I only traded to a 2nd generation for more ponys and an extra gear in the auto. I had the other truck for nine years and was ready for something new. I like the fact of more room and more pep. My '99 was a great truck and maybe nicer in some ways but it was a LIMITED version that is not even offered now.

Yeah, why did Toyota do away with that trim pkg? Pre-95.5, it was Base, DLX or SR5, then with the Gen1's it was Base, SR5, Limited, now its SR5 1 or SR5 2? I had a couple of pre-95.5 trucks that were SR5 who's trim level was super nice, the trim material was high quality, carpet mats that were super thick & heavy, plus sunroofs & 7-way sport bucket seats. I love those damn 7-way sport bucket seats! Comfy as all get out!
