"GM Trucks/SUVs" is a broad category. You're conflating the full size models (designed/built by the truck division who do a good job of it) with the compact models (built by the Chevy car division who are the reason that GMs most profitable divisions were GMAC and DirecTV until they were spun off, then the UAW needed a bailout to prevent their contracts from being voided when the company went bankrupt). The 1500/Silverado are good quality vehicles which last a long time, but the S10/Sonoma/Colorado are a step up from being an Aveo with a cargo bed.
In the small truck world, you're likely better off buying a used Ranger than a new Colorado; there's probably more pre-tacoma Toyota pickups made in the 1980s still on the road than there are 1990s and 2000s model year S10s/Sonomas combined, at least where I live (then there's the even larger population of 1st gen Tacomas from the 90s/2000s in addition to that).

If you really need to get a GM, get a full sized truck, or a restored muscle car from the 1960s. Other than that, there's a reason that GM has so many ever-increasing incentive programs while 2016 Tacomas are selling as fast as they can be produced, and seem to often have sticker prices above MSRP.

Well then why did you buy a Tacoma? They don't recommend buying it either!

How could you possibly know what the resale value of a Colorado/Canyon is for 60 months, other than artificially inflated lease "residuals"? The truck had horrid resale value on the prior generation, and this one has only been out for a year, and is already having issues. I think 35-40% for 60 months is more realistic for a Colorado.

I'll tell ya why you shouldn't buy a Colorado, as if it isn't apparent already from 7 pages of people telling you why not. Because it's a Chevy. Toyota's are actually rising in value can't say the same for Chevy. Do us all a favor go on a Chevy forum and as why you should buy a Taco.

I feel one of these threads pop up weekly to let people who are insecure about their 3rd gen tacoma purchase bash on GM haha

The twins and the tacoma are both great trucks. Go look at them, drive them, and choose what is best for you. Asking for bias opinions from fanboys on tacoma and colorado/canyon forums isn't the best way to do research. Reliability and resale are closer than they have been in the past. For resale, you're looking at about $700-800 difference after 5 years, which could mostly be made up by the difference in MPGs. Looking at multiple forums, the problems with the most current gen of these trucks is pretty similar. To me, this is the major factor in buying:

Buy a tacoma if you like the looks better and off road often. Otherwise the twins have the tacoma beat on pretty much everything else.

true. GM's is automatically kicking in when needed (you have no control over it), but it does work well when it's engaged. Toyota gives you 100% control when it's engaged...excellent off-roading feature, and You must purchase the off-road package to get this Locking feature.

I'm not gonna lie, I kinda like the way the new Colorados look. I immediately liked it, whereas with the 2016 Tacoma, it took some time to grow on me.
But I trust a Toyota over a GM product any day. There's a reason there's still a crap ton of Toyota trucks on the road, and why you can still sell an old-as-dirt Toyota for a lot more than its Chevy counterpart.
    Reliability and simplicity.

I believe most people buy (and pay so much) for Tacoma's primarily for:

    1. Perception of reliability

    2. Hopes of unparalleled resale value

    3. They don't want a full size truck for various reasons. Oh and the Tacoma is one of the last few to offer a manual transmission.

Now, items one and two have historically shown to be valid. Tacomas are reliable, making it hundreds of thousands of miles in most cases. Of course, no production line (in any industry) is perfect so some people do have problems. Just like some people can say Fords are junk while there are plenty of people in Fords making it 200k+ miles. I can say though, that Toyota's method of Lean Manufacturing is very highly regarded. Actually, a lot of companies that run production lines look to Toyota's methodology to make sure their own manufacturing will be as efficient as possible with the best quality. So take that for what its worth. As for item two, well it isn't hard to see that if you buy a few year old Tacoma you are only saving a few grand off of a new one. So the resale value is there.

However, even though the reliability and resale value have historically been there, I personally don't advise buying a car ONLY for those reasons. You never know what the future market will do, especially if you plan to keep the car for a very long time. I will be realistic and say that although your odds might technically be better in a Tacoma, in regards to reliability, you can also have a reliable Ford, Chevy, GMC, etc. Look at the board here, plenty of people are complaining about their new Tacomas. Plenty of people also love them. Go to a Ford forum, Chevy forum, etc. and you will see the SAME thing.

Buy the truck that you like the best. You will be driving this truck every day for the next 3, 5, 7, 10, or however many years. If you think another truck suits your needs better, do you really want to get in your Tacoma every day and say "Gosh, good thing when I sell this years from now I'll get a few extra grand for it." Enjoying your ride is worth a lot more.

Personally, I am after a Tacoma because I believe in Toyota's manufacturing process, I believe in Toyota to stand behind their product better than the other auto makers, a smaller truck suits my needs for a variety of reasons, and I want a manual transmission. Those are my reasons. When i jump in a 2016 Tacoma, I realize 35k could get me better creature comforts in another vehicle, but it is enough for me, and my criteria has left me with the Tacoma as my primary option......all I need to do is find that 4x4 Off Road manual transmission in MGM...dang unicorns!!

Just calling it as I see it. I think the twins might be an alright truck. I know my S-10 has been a good truck. I think the first gen Colorado's and Canyons were a mistake.... this new gen is actually got some good stuff going on.

That being said, I actually joined as I'm pretty close to replacing my S-10 with a Tacoma. I had some questions that I wanted answered.

I just ordered my first truck. Was not brand loyal to anything but wound up going with a tacoma Off road for a lot a reasons:

    1. Off road package was better than anything the Colorado offered.
    2. Once I sat in a 2016 Tacoma I got truck drunk, had to have one. Didn't get that feeling with a Colorado.
    3. Colorado has only been out a year. I do not trust GM and the Colorado does not have years of info on it.
    4. In a year or two I will probably be getting a Raptor or Pro, a tacoma gives me a better guaranteed resale value.
    5. Lots of other reasons that went for the tacoma or for the Colorado, but those were the big 4.

I'll take a stab at this one...

The GM twins are not recommended due to poor reliability (re CR April 2016 auto issue). Tacoma, while also not recommended, is struck down for more subjective reasons such as ride quality but, CR indicates great reliability. I'm guessing it's a matter of where ones priorities lie. For me, once I find a vehicle that meets my basic need and I otherwise like it, safety, reliability and resale become factors.

My 2006 Colorado with 70K needed a head. 5 yrs old. The dealer said oh that sucks. Yet in 3 minutes or less I found the secret warranty online he claimed to never hear of. Same dealer 4 wks later refused to do the work unless I paid cash up front. Another dealer did it but banged me almost 2 grand for the cam and chains which they stated is due to the head and GM will reimburse me for. GM said no, he could have gotten approval but we don't do that. Dealer said he won't do it as he loses $ on warranty work and then told me he's done many of these that didn't need the extras..which contradicts the previous statement of never hearing of it.

This is why after 20 yrs I won't buy another GM.

I believe the Canyon is just a luxury version of the Colorado, Right? Same case with all GMC and Chevrolet trucks...

GMC is usually the more Expensive Version.
