If you look at the EPA fuel economy it begs the question why Toyota even bothered to put a new engine and transmission in this thing. The 2016 Double Cab is mpg is horrible. No offense to anyone here but I would be hard pressed to buy a Ram or Ford.....but come on Toyota. 10 years and this is the best you can do?

+1, why replace a proven engine unless there is some improvement. I am 3-4 years out before I buy another but probably going full size next time

still no diesel from toyota but a redesigned v6 gasser? i have been out of the toyota game since 2010 and my regular cab 4x4 so forgive the ignorance.
but to my knowledge toyota has a great diesel they sell over seas why don't they do the leg work and bring it here so americans can enjoy more power and a significant increase in millage?

i my 1 ton AEV ram on 37's with 410 gears gets considerably better millage than a tocoma thats shocking to me honestly. i can tow 19k pounds and not even notice its back there. i have a 1,000 pound feet of torque on tap and the over built aisin trans thats found in 5500 series trucks. i'm returning a legit 23 to 25 mpg on the truck now i drive it easy and keep my foot out of the turbo's but with that much torque you don't need to be hard on it lol. but its crazy to me that a legit mid duty diesel with that much power weight and modifications to it is capable of returning better fuel milage.

for what its worth i don't think i'll ever drive a gas engine again unless i really really like the vehicle and a diesel isn't an option. this big cummins is a sweet motor, i like my toyota trucks but solid axles and diesels are good things to have very good things to have.

The mileage doesn't matter to me. If they said 15mpg, still would have bought it.
The thing that is irritating is that after 10+ years, all Toyota did was release a weak V6 with some stupid, fancy terminology that has underperformed. I LOVE Toyota and my 2016 but the engine part is really confusing. Someone has egg on their face. How embarrassing it must be for them to run their mouths about efficiency and boast about 40+ HP gains when none of that is noticed in real world driving?

I think this will all come out at some point. My guess, considering the 3.5L Lexus counterpart, is that something will be figured out via tune or some kind of computer remap that will find at least 30+HP... and hopefully a smarter shifting transmission.

I'm REALLY rooting for a quality, reliable supercharger of some sort. I'll be first in line.

Love my truck tho. Just kind of puts a slight haze over it all for me.

I love Toyota but to go after Ford in comparison, when the GM and Dodge crap out there is WAY worse, doesn't make much sense, IMO. Ford builds good stuff, Chevy builds OK at best stuff, Dodge builds complete and utter garbage... and Toyota builds great trucks.

You know what they say about opinions, right? :poking:

A 9% fuel economy improvement = "horrible"? If a 9% improvement isn't worth it, what is?

Oh, I have! You just really have to mash it down to get any real response. Any vehicle that I have ever driven seems to respond with much less effort, including the Scion xB I'm driving right now (loaner, getting stuff done to the Tacoma)

I didn't mention it in my first post but I think it will get better as time goes. I only have 600 miles on it right now.

Comparing the double cab is pointless because the only 2016 double cab listed is a manual, and when comparing to the older versions the manual gets significantly worse fuel economy. The F-150 you are comparing is the eco-boost, which starts in the mid 43k range, that is if you upgrade from the fleet version. Want sat-nav like the Tacoma? 45k+. Not exactly apples to apples. Same with the Ram, sure you can get a 4x4 full size that gets similar or better fuel economy, but as soon as you even think about getting one equipped similarly to a Tacoma, you're in the $45-55k price range.

You are forgetting that the big 3 offer big discounts on their trucks. $8K-$9K in mark down at least can be had with just some negotiating and searching. On a Tacoma you are lucky to see $2K in mark down off MSRP. That tightens that gap. There are plenty of guys on here paying less for well loaded XLT's with the Sport package than people have been paying for TRD Sports in a similar cab configuration. While I think it's an apples and oranges comparison since the trucks are totally different in size and capability you can have the bigger truck for similar money if it fits your needs and lifestyle without that much of an mpg knock.

I'm not sure why that ruffles peoples feathers. If it does, buy a full size until Toyota does something about it. Otherwise just be happy with your Tacoma for what it is.

If reliability and resale value are of little concern to you, I absolutely agree. You can call that fanboyism if you'd like, but as someone who actually likes the Rams, and especially the Cummins, I don't trust Fiat reliability. And those great rebates that make the truck an awesome deal, sure you save now, but you'll pay down the road with resale value.
