What size drop hitch did you end up getting to tow that U-Haul trailer? I am going to be pulling the same size uhaul trailer and have purchased a 4 inch drop hitch (2" ball) and am looking to get a ball park on if that's enough or too much? I have yet to test hook it up.

TBH, I just bought it from U-Haul since they would know best and it would come pre-torqued to the right specs. It was only $25 with tax and you install it in one minute. What you have should work fine. They would tell you otherwise and would not allow you to take the trailer if you have the wrong one.

So, I have read this and am still confused. I have found articles that say the Taco maxes out at 3500 towing and also about 6000. I am buying a boat and trailer that has a 4000 total weight. I will only use the Taco for pulling the boat out of the water and taking it to the dealer for service and so on....no long distance trip. Will the Taco handle? Any special options?

Depends which truck you have and which options. Gen 3 6800lbs with towing package, gen2 I think is 6000 with tow package.

Get the owner's manual from here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-tacoma-owners-manual-pdf.389711/#post-10716105

Look up the truck you want with options in the towing section starting at page 172. There are many different max trailer weights depending upon the options on your truck (2WD vs 4WD, access cab vs double cab, 4 cyl vs 6 cyl, manual vs auto trans, tow pkg or not). Your list above says 6 cyl DC 4WD with auto trans and tow pkg. That's going to be 6,400 pounds max for the trailer and contents. Dealer added options (like the tonneau cover) or things you might add to the truck's weight will also reduce the towing capacity. There are other things to consider as you get into the higher end of the weight like a trailer brake controller, weight distribution hitch, tongue weight, etc. All this is explained in gory detail in the manual.

Short answer is, the options you specified include V6 Towing Package, which rates towing capacity somewhere in the 6000s. If you get a truck without the tow package, max capacity will be somewhere around 3500.

Keep in mind it is prohibitively difficult/expensive to add all of the things that give you that extra capacity if you do not get it that way from factory.

Well picked it up Sat. morning and headed straight to the camp ground. It pulled better than expected even with the 20/30 mph wind gust.
    image.jpg
Kept in in select mode and no higher than 4th gear. I found out that all three tanks were full of water after arriving at the camp ground. Which didn't help the cause. On the way home today it pulled even better minus the water. Which my best guess was over 900#s. All and all I'm very happy with the results.

The standard towing weight for the Tacoma is 3500 pounds. If you have the optional towing package it is 6000 pounds.
make sure you get the towing package. A few people here never got it. Then wanted it after the fact. The factory install is the best way to go.

Wow, I'm seriously impressed with the size of the travel trailers you guys are hauling.
I only haul ski boats now but pulled travel trailers many moons ago with large V-8's.
