Confused about 4x2 offroad model

But the debate isn't 4x4 vs 4x2, it's why get an "off-road" 4x2. If you need 4x4, get it. If your truck never leaves pavement, get 4x2.

 

Because Toyota knows the marketing strategy works with the current branding. It's a trim package....not much more to it then that. People want it....that's why it exists. Case closed.

 

I've always been a 4x4 guy. I used to go on a lot of mountain logging trails when I was in high school and college, and I actually just sold my 2010 4x4 King Ranch f150. Since I graduated and moved to the coast, I think I've used 4x4 one time. I'm getting the TRD OR DC 4x2 because it looks better than the the other models to me and it fits what I need in a truck. I like the factory wheels, 120v in the bed, locking dif, keyless start, appearance features of the TRD OR. I'll use the dif lock when dropping in my flats skiff in areas with no boat ramps. So for me it doesn't make sense to spend the extra money on the 4x4.

It's all about the trim. As I stated earlier, some don't like the scoop, some don't want leather, but they want push button start, integrated nav,etc. So, a 4x2 Off road was made. It opens up more sales for Toyota, appeal to all types of drivers.

 

Getting the 4X4 OR because I don't like the scoop and I wanted the Manual Trans. I don' need a 4X4 and can't understand why the 4X2 does not come with the MT. I think more people would buy a MT but a 4X4 might be too much. Go figure

 

I'm more confused by people that shell out a couple extra grand for the 4x4 and never use it.

 

Went to Anza borrego desert state park over the weekend with my Trd off-road 4x2 with a bunch of other TW members (which all Of them had 4x4) and I did everything they could do including powering up sand hills ext.. I never used the locker once and I did everything with ease. Everything out there was basically sand and lose pack dirt. I bought the 4x2 because I'm mainly on ge road and only usually go on off-roading/ camping trips like once a month or so and in my eyes the 4x4 wasn't need for me. I had my tires running at 20 psi along with everyone else
The only big thing 4x4 would be able to and 4x2 wouldn't be able to do is some hard rock crawling trails and some very muddy situations

I don't live near snow and don't off-road other than mild trails, fire roads and gravel , so I didn't need 4wd. Honestly I would have been fine with regular 2wd, but I saw the TRD OR 2wd and loved the truck for other reasons. The locker is a bonus but I rarely use it. It's not why I bought the truck, but it's a nice to have that gives it a little more stretch

 

That kind of terrain a 2wd truck can handle. Not saying their isn't any obstacles, but it's not going to get far in some swampy mud trails in huge ruts and stuff. This is why the run Baja trucks in the desert

 

Yeah I agree. Fortunately for me there's not many swampy/ muddy places in socal so I don't have to worry about it

 

Wish I didn't need a 4x4. Get too much snow here. Could get away with a 2wd but it's well worth the extra money around here. Plus good luck selling a 2wd around here

 

Yeah the point of having a 4x4 and 4x2 TRD off road for Toyota is because hey know some people don't need 4x4 but like the look of the TRD off road and some people need the 4x4 it's all about the area in which people live in

That's it. They know people want the bells and whistles but a lot will never go off-road, or only a little where a 2wd will be plenty. If I lived in a warm climate I would probably buy one. My f150 and Nissan I never took off-road. My old Tacoma I did though. I'd rather be able to save a few grand if I had the choice

 

Yeah down to 20 psi like everyone if I didn't I would have almost certainly gotten stuck in that sand haha

I have the TRD OR 4x2, should have bought the 4x4. The locker is nice but only makes you wish you had 4x4.

 

I have a friend who has a TRD Off-road 4x2, when I asked him why he didn't go for the 4x4, he told me that he liked the looks, but had no use for 4wd. I could see where some people may just want a rear locker or like the looks, especially given that a number of people don't like the front air dam offered on other trims.

 

Up to now, I have overcome 99% of the obstacles on my pre-runner that my 4wd friends have done in the desert. I live in southern california. My biggest issue has been that I have a DCLB without under armor but rock sliders. In any case, my 4wd friends are just amaze with my tires and how I get through things on the road. All you hear, oh!! he got the right tires!!. Snow or wet roads may need 4wd, but on my 2wd, I rather have Clearance and good tires before 4wd. In any case, this is just me talking from experience on my 2wd. Those on 4wd will always brag about their rigs...... but the reality is that they dont know any better.


4wd guys told me I could not get here without 4wd.... to each his own....
