    Started my water pump and timing belt job today. I'd say it was long overdue. Truck has just under 160k on the odometer.

    I'd be curious to know the condition of the water pump. Non interference motor so if it broke wouldn't be the end of the world. Unlike my VW TDI's. That belt goes it take out valves and all sorts of bad shit can happen. Good luck on the replacement. I'm doing mine in a few weeks @110k.

    There was no play or noise in the shaft. I couldn't tell if the crusty antifreeze came from a bad gasket or the weep hole

    That's good to hear. Since most likely the water pump has never been replaced did it have the RTV for the seal? My 2000 I bought from the original owner had to fix his as it was leaking at 47k.

    It had the rtv. I used the metal/rubber gasket that came with the pump.

    So I got it all buttoned up but as usual I had stuff left over.

    This nut and bolt. They may or may not go together but the do fit. Any ideas where it came from?

    No clue. I'll let you know when I do mine in another week. See if I come across that.

    I had some similar bolts left over when I tackled this job (done it on 2 different vehicles).

    I reused the bolts that were holding the pulley on the tensioner since they were 12mm or 14mm, can't remember now. The ones pictured above were holding the new pulley on the new tensioner but were 13mm. I thought it would be best to keep it all 12mm and 14mm inside there.

    Now that I look back that could be it! See, when taking stuff apart on this job I unbolted the tensioner pulley from the bracket. When I took the new one out of the box I saw where you're supposed to unbolt the bracket not the pulley so that could be it

    Damn, found another mystery part under the truck. Must have missed it when I was cleaning up after this job. Any ideas as to where it goes?

    I did take the old tensioner pulley off the bracket mistakenly when I took everything apart. I hope it goes there.
