I just went through the pain of replacing both front rotors and pads on my '99 and repacking the wheel bearings. Very surprised that it shakes now worse than before. WTH did I do wrong and how do I fix it?

Dirt or rust between rotor and hub or between rim and rotor causing wobble

I tried to do a good job of cleaning things but you're right, it does look like a case of something not being aligned right. There is a scuffed area on the rotor that is only about 4 inches wide and onjy the outer part of the rotor. Do I need to have them do something to the surface of that roto? I wonder if it could be the way I pushed in the piston or maybe even a bent caliper.

Scuffing looks pretty normal for a new rotor, could be something simple as grease on the rotor...spray some brake cleaner on both sides of the rotor and brake pads and wipe down with a clean cloth. Also make sure your pins are lubed. I doubt your caliper is bent. What did your old pads/rotors look like?

If you repacked the bearings.... Did you 'seat' (preload) the bearings properly??

Does it vibrate without applying the brakes?

Only shakes when brakes applied and very noticeable over 30 mph

Still sounds more like there was brake fluid or grease on the rotors and or pads. you can also get a clean brillo pad and BRAKE cleaner and scrub the pads/rotors...

you probably didn't clean off the antirusting oil they put on these things. if you didn't, clean the rotors with dishwashing soap and water. don't worry about the rust. also run the brake pads along some 80 grit sandpaper while on concrete, you want to remove a small layer to get rid of whatever oil was embedded in the friction material.

How is that normal? All the scuffing is on one relatively small area of the rotor towards the edge so I would think that indiates something is not lined up right

Paul, I had the same issue after replacing my front calibers and rotors, Ended it up being my rear brakes needing adjustment they were not engaging letting the front brakes do all the work. Being new to Tacoma I didn't realize they didn't adjust by backing up.

I did spray the rotors with brake parts cleaner and wipe them lightly but I probably should have done a better job of that.

Someone asked what the old rotors looked like, They had some grooves, not too bad but not smooth. Brake pads, I'm annoyed with myself for not having marked them so I could tell which side they came from. I'll have to look at them again. I do seem to remember that it looked like one was wearing at at a slight angle.
About the wheelbearings, I didn't know anything about preloading. I just watched this video and the guy just said to hand tighten them. I will check into that

I have seen plenty of "new" rotors warped right out of the box. Thats what this sounds like to me.

Yup, warped out of the box, holy cow, the guy at the parts store put it on the lathe and I watched it wobble like crazy. Here it is after being on the lathe for a while. YIKESimage.jpg

hmmm its hard to believe those are really that bad. especially when it's so easy to screw up mounting these things on lathes. wish you lived near me, id say bring them to me and I would give you a definitive answer

I just finished putting the new ones on, and took it for a spin. all is good! at least as far as brakes, now alignment tomorrow morning and things should improve noticeably.
