so I just watched the two vids. Tacoma did it in 8:05 and canyon did it in 8:55
I know that the 3.5 gets its bruises on here but let's give credit where credit is due.

Now the downhill was a different story....

My 16' dcsb or is the first Toyota I've ever owned, and I must say I absolutely love it!

The Colorado has a exhaust brake which helps with the downhill.

It's called horsepower. The 3.5L Tacoma has more of it than the diesel GM twins.

Comparing speeds on a diesel that was made to be a mid size truck that can haul nearly as much stuff as a full size is kind of weird...

It has more HP, that result was expected.

How did the 2.8L diesel do compared to the Tacoma in the TFL towing mpg test loop again?

No but I bet you would be trying to maintain 60 mph. The Tacoma did but the $44k Canyon could not.

The diesel is really a mileage improvement more than a towing improvement. The problem is you factor in the $3700 upgrade price and the additional cost of diesel fuel and saving money on fuel becomes quite difficult.

The Tacoma has 50% more horsepower than the 2.8l Duramax. That is a HUGE difference.

It's not surprising. In another TFL Truck comparison, when they stuck a V8 F150 against the Diesel Colorado, the mpg difference was only ~3-4 mpgs with a 5500 lbs load, the trucks weighed within 300 lbs of each other, and the Ford handily out towed it just in driver feel.

At the end though you can tell that the TFL Truck guys have a hard on for Diesel. The driver was an independent type who clearly loved the F150 for towing and acceleration, but then the TFL guy basically guided him into saying "well if you need a truck that's easier to park and can move 5500 lbs, which is what EVERY American family needs, than who cares if the Diesel is only a few mpg better with a load, slow as balls, and costs nearly as much after discounts." The TFL guy kept coming back to the sticker price difference between their loaded Lariat and Diesel SLT Colorado, which was about 9K. However, he completely blew over OTD price because both trucks were free to him.

In other words, TFL truck has a hard on for Diesel so don't expect them to give the Tacoma accolades in their videos.

Yeah, the main guy's rating on the interior on all trucks seems to be completely based on if he can get his fat ass in the driver's seat without taking off his hat!

Goes to show that the 3.5 can beat a diesel.

I think people who complain about feeling a weak engine is due to the fact that Toyota now regulates the throttle to save MPG. If you slam your foot to the floor, the ECU delays and smooths out the response which makes the engine feel weak. You feel less of a slam on the take off. Which is good because it doesn't let heavy footers whip their neck on take offs and then complain about their MPG.

Also one of the reasons that it lost in this shootout:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbmOYTMirrw

If you had the PWR ECT engaged in all those trucks, the 3.5 and 4.0 would probably tie(4.0 has bigger displacement but the 3.5 has a higher compression ratio) and the 3.4 would end up last. All in all, all of those trucks on that review would shave at least 1/2 second with the PWR ECT engaged.

I'm actually kind of surprised these guys still get free trucks to review. Their reviews, while often funny, rarely show anything that people didn't already know. As others have said, the vehicle that wins rarely has anything to do with the results they see. Instead they usually judge based on some arbitrary feature like whether a guy in a cowboy hat can get in without knocking his hat off.

Before I ordered my Tacoma, I crunched the numbers on how many kilometers it would take to break even on the diesel GM adder vs a Tacoma sport. The difference was roughly $4000 CAD and I factored in the costs of DEF as well and used historical gas and diesel prices for the last 5 years.

The number I came out to was about 230,000 km (143,000 miles for you muricans) just in order to break even.

When Toyota was considering a diesel in their Tundra, they did a survey they found out that more than half of the people that drive a diesel do not use it for what a diesel was made for. It's more of a "hear my engine" (for lack of better words) than for hauling bigger things.
