Took my truck in for service. Dealer said I would need to replace my timing cover gasket at some point ($1900 ouch) there a small leak. My question is how hard is it? Has anyone done a step by step write up.

It is a well known leak point at the upper corner by the AC Compressor Mount.

Some have done it, but I think that it is quite involved for a novice mechanic.

Hopefully someone more experienced with this will chime in.

My truck is apart getting frame recall done and svc mgr said 7 hours while the motor is out, 17 if its still in truck . I know the tech doing my frame and he said PAIN IN THE ASS! He showed me pics the whole front of motor, all accessories have to come off. So unless you have full shop and ton of patients i would deal with it or pass the buck. That is a lot to deal with in the truck with stuff in your way

    Exactly..
there is no pressure inside that cover, but your engine needs to keep slight vacuum for it to work correctly.
So OP do what Torspd said and be done with it. ...

So with your method, it's just clean up the area and smoosh some gasket maker into the seam without taking apart the front end?

Correct. I've pointed out why those two spots are problematic in the TSB thread as well.

This particular gasket maker does not require being squeezed between mating surfaces to work well and adhere. This or the black will work well. However, I have only used the grey, and had great lasting success on many occassions.

This is the Black version your are referring to correct? http://www.autozone.com/sealants-gl...t-stuff-gasket-maker/82550_0_0/?checkfit=true

My truck is torn apart on the rack right now, and no one around has the grey stuff in stock, so I wanted to make sure this will work. They wanted $1500 to do the valve covers, and timing cover so this will save a boatload of $$. Worst case, it isn't leaking very bad, so I will just read up on doing it and tackle it in the garage when it's a little warmer outside.

Even with the 30 minute method, take your time and do it right. first, make note of the exact area to seal. Use brake cleaner to get the surface clean. Apply the sealant cleanly and carefully, and be precise to get it directly on the leaking area, not just around it. If done right itll work... but if you do it wrong youll have a really shitty mess to fix later cuz that sealant is hardcore.

Thanks, when I went to autozone, they actually had the grey so I just grabbed that. The tech that is doing the swap is going to put it on there for me since he has the engine out of the frame.

Hello. I am new to the forum and I also have no experience at all in this kind of stuff. I am have a very similar problem and was told my leak was coming from the passenger side. Can you be a little more specific where you would recommend placing the gasket sealant?

Awesome! This is on the passenger side correct? Much rather do this correctly than having to pay the dealership $1800 to fix the problem
