Go here. Awesome views with campsites on the rim of the Grand Canyon. The road in is about 60 miles of rock washboard through Indian reservation land. This is also known as Toroweap or Toroweep.

There are thousands of good camping spots in northern AZ! I lived in Scottsdale for almost 30 years, so I've been camping in many different places all over.

Where up north? Flag? Canyon? Sedona? Rim Country? Prescott?

This weekend may be tough, as a lot of places are closed until spring. Definitely check ahead to make sure things are open. When they are...

Take Highway 260 East. Drive about 15-20 miles and there are campgrounds on both sides. About 30 miles you'll get to Forest Road 300 (aka the Rim Road) and turn left. This road connects back to Highway 87 north of Strawberry if you want to make a long loop. FR300 has many roads that branch off to the lakes and camping. Woods Canyon, Chevlon Canyon, Bear Canyon, Willow Springs and Knoll Lakes are stocked by AZ Game & Fish. I've fished 'em all and caught little - good luck!

    Ding ding ding ding ding!

Photos are from 2003, back when my T100 was only 6 years old! I'm not sure they let you 4-wheel out to that spot any more. They've shut down most of the at-large camping near Sedona that has a view.

Try up here in Canada. The beaches are beautiful this time of year.

Can you please tell me if it's 2WD accessible or mostly 4WD?
    Thanks

Agree. Unless there is snow or it's very muddy, 2wd is enough.

Heck, we made it way, way back into the forest in a 1980's Ford LTD.

I asked my wife to marry me not far from there. 8 years and 2 kids later, still happy!

The camping is no more, but you can still drive Schnebly Hill Rd. You have to use the official campgrounds or go way, way back in the sticks before you can camp.

Just a bunch of old crap
Up on the rim about 30 miles east of Payson is a lake called Willow Springs Lake. The road is open and the lake is ice free. There is prepared camping, and you can probably explore some old logging roads and find some private camping. The other Rim lakes like Woods Canyon, Bear, Knoll, etc. are closed because Rim Road (FS300) is still closed for the winter (but not for long). Rim Road should open up at any time now. They always have to do winter damage repair of potholes and whatnot.

I went to Willow Springs last weekend and there was no overnight camping allowed, I had to stay in a different camping site higher up the highway

Wow that's surprising. They have prepared campgrounds there, but maybe there wasn't a host yet. You don't have to go far to camp right near the lake though. Did you fish?
