Great thread. I don't fly but wanted to, but would never pass the medical for vision...color blindness. Instead, I try to keep birds out of the way for you guys to take off and land.

Welcome to the thread! So do you work on an airport with one of those canons to scare the birds away?

My canons are shoulder fired! I cover a few airports in eastern PA. I'm a wildlife biologist and assist airports with writing wildlife hazard management plans, get programs up and going, etc.

I have been very interested in become a aviation mechanic, but what does it take to be a pilot for a company like southwest or delta. I'm 25, is it to late to make that happen? If not what are the steps i would need to take to make it happen? I looked online for answers but can't seem to find a straight answer. Also lets hear from the mechanics what do you like/ don't like about your job? Where did you go to school to get your a&p certification? Right now i work at MSP airport at the tank farm helping with testing and getting fuel to where it needs to be for the fuelers but would like to move into a different side of aviation such as mechanic or pilot.

    I'm an aircraft mechanic & I fly.

First off, you're not too old to be an Air Transport Pilot (ATP) but, IMO, you need to get started.

You don't have to have a BS or BA but, it'll help getting on with the majors.

To be an ATP you'll need at least 1,500 hours flight time. They way you get there can be a few different ways but most get their private, the instructors and begin building time as an instructor to get their commercial ticket and build their time to ATP level.

I'm sure there's an ATP who can better detail it. The actual cut & dried rules are in the FARs but how to slice it will come best from those who've done more than own & fly a 150 (me).

As far as mechanic there's 3 basic ways. Military if they will sign you off to get certificated, school, or working under a mechanic who can/will sign you off.

I'll try and get through most of your questions here, but unfortunately I will not be able to answer the questions about becoming an aircraft mechanic. Others here should be able to tackle those.

First, I do not think 25 is too old. In fact, I was 26 when I decided I wanted to fly professionally. I already had been flying for over 10 years at that point, but only as a private pilot doing fun trips with friends and aerobatics. I went to college for Advertising Photography and worked as a commercial photographer for several years before I decided I wanted to make the switch. If you start now and make it to a major airline like Southwest by the time you're 35, you can still do 30 years at that airline before you reach the required retirement age of 65.

Now what it takes to get there is a complicated question. If you have made up your mind and are super serious, you can fast-track you training through a school like Airline Transport Professionals. https://atpflightschool.com It's a bit expensive, as is all flight training, but you get done in the shortest amount of time with all your certificates. I can go in more depth about this type of training later if you are curious.

To go from zero time to an airline pilot is a long road, but the journey is mostly fun. I'm part way through that journey myself. You need to get your certificates finished before you can start making money -> Private, Instrumsnt, Single and Multi-Engine Commerical, and Flight Instructor Certificates. You don't have to become a flight instructor, but that's the fastest route to build hours and expirience.

Once you have about 1500 hours total, you need to find a job that will build Turbine time. That's either jet or turbo-prop. MOST pilots join the regional airlines (Skywest, Horizon, Mesa, etc.) for 1-5 years to get the required time. The pay sucks. Or you can become a corporate pilot. Pay is better. It is more difficult to get a job in this field just due to quantity of jobs and the demand of the schedule. You could work for a company like SurfAir or Wheels Up. http://www.surfair.com/careers.html https://wheelsup.com/ There are many ways to get turbine time, but you will need 1500 hours of turbine time, and at least 1000 hours of them need to be as Pilot in Command. Follow this link to see all the requirements to fly for Southwest. https://www.southwest.com/html/about-southwest/careers/positions/pilots.html

Seems like a lot. It is. But you can be working as a pilot in less than a year if you work hard and fast. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

Yep, during flight training in Texas. Flying a T-45 on short final I caught a hawk in my right-main landing gear. Half of him fell out between runways on the taxi back, the rest was ceremoniously presented to me in a Ziploc back in Mx. Got lucky he just missed my intake....single-engine aircraft.....might have had my first ejection.
