For the three members who are experiencing this , do you have a trustworthy transmission shop in your area .
A simple test drive which are usually free will verify that you have a hydraulic clutch issue .

Seems odd that this access cover by the slave doesn't have a gasket or anything. I would think if you offroad a lot, water could get in there easily. 20160301_081118.jpg20160301_081218.jpg

I am not sure bleeding the hydraulics is going to help . Its a good idea to try it but I believe your hydraulic circuit is leaking internally.
There were no complaints within the posts indicating that your truck had a difficult time selecting first and reverse after sitting overnight .
This would mean that the hydraulic circuit works fine when its cold .
Yes , you should have a cover
Wondering if the dealer forgot to put it back or did they get that far ?
Tell Tale signs that someone was trying to diagnose an issue
Do I see signs of moisture or is that camera flash ?

It goes into 1st and reverse perfectly hot or cold. I can only think of one time it was a little difficult to get it into reverse, but never 1st. No it has a cover, I was just commenting that I was surprised to find that the cover isn't a water tight seal. They didn't get that far. Other then checking the Transmission level, they wouldn't do anything else since it didn't stick during their test drive. You might be seeing grease. There was some grease on one corner of the cover as well as some of the moving parts inside the transmission.

I might hold off on bleeding the clutch if you don't think that is the issue considering it always goes into 1st gear like butter. Also, the clutch reservoir hasn't lost any fluid, so if there is a leak, then it's very slow. Or are you thinking that the fluid is blowing past a seal in either the slave or master when I put in the clutch, so I wouldn't be able to see any lose of fluid?

There were a couple instances back when the RA60 came out with end play issues . As much as the problem sounds like a clutch hydraulic issue , I also suspect the slight possibility of an end play problem . The transmission was built too tight and it hasn't broken in yet .
Wish I could test drive the truck , I would know in a heartbeat . Diagnosing from the armchair is no fun
Do you notice any stickiness in the shifter when you try to shift while going uphill ? Its something you can try
Moving forward as you are shifting uphill will release the reverse powerflow

Yes, the shifter will stick when going uphill or down hill as well. Going up a steep hill on the I-17 in 4th gear behind a truck, I went to shift into 3rd to pass the truck, and it was stuck in 4th. It rarely sticks in town, however on my way back home there is a long down hill. Maybe 1 - 1.5 miles long. I just put the truck in 6th gear and roll down it at 45-50 mph. Near the bottom of the hill, I put in the clutch to shift it to 5th, and every single time I have gone down the hill it has stuck since new. That's when I first realized I had a problem. I'm not sure it is because of the length of time I am in the same gear for, or if it happens because I am going downhill. But other then that, it's very rare for the shifter to stick in the city because I am constantly changing gears.

    Update:

My local dealer has opened a case with Toyota. They are sending the video directly to Toyota, and the Engineers at Toyota are going to watch the video, so stay tune. I will update when I hear back.

Thanks. I didn't because I want to see what the Engineers come up with on their own. If they don't seem to be getting anywhere, then I will definitely throw the end play theory out there.

    Thanks for the help!

Double clutching makes the shift from second to first easy with my 2.7l 5 speed. Without double clutching the transmission won't go into first gear with reasonable force above about 5 mph. I didn't try pushing on it as hard as I could because I knew about double clutching. I only shift from second to first to keep going, not to slow down under normal conditions so I wouldn't be using the brakes.

I believe the problem is that first gear is a nice low gear and the synchronizer can't match the speed difference because the wheels are turning the rest of the transmission.

My experience with clutches that aren't releasing fully is that there are problems shifting into first and reverse. Shifting when moving is usually easier, it's like floating gears and matching rpms.

Yes, gearcruncher explained what you are talking about well here:

"The 2nd to first downshift issue is a common complaint as you are slowing to a stop .
It is called reverse power flow .
When you decelerate , your rear differential actually drives the drive shaft which in turn drives the output shaft of the transmission .
As you are slowing down , there is a load on the transmission preventing you from grabbing first gear .
Pushing the clutch to the floor is not going to help . When you push the clutch to the floor , the engine is disconnected from powering the transmission , however , because the truck is rolling ,there is still a load on your transmission from the rear differential ."

I wasn't sure if my understanding was the same as gearcruncher's. I see that it is now.

THIS. I had this problem this past weekend. Noticed that it was difficult to get out of 6th gear after driving on the interstate for a while. Hope there's a solution for this soon.

Updated: To add to the above, only time I'm on the interstate is driving out of town. Other than that, it's straight city driving while I'm in the city since everywhere I need to go to is less than 9 miles away :).

That makes 4 of us then. I added a pole to the 1st page. Please vote if you are having the same problems so that we can get an idea what percentage of manuals are having this problem.

I think Tacoma will be soon called "domestic" truck.

Overreaction much? My truck only has the howl, and since I know what it is I really don't care enough to fix it. If those are the extent of the problems then it's about as good as it gets... Perfect vehicles don't exist, I'm thankful this truck has less problems than my 2nd gen

It is a domestic truck. Made right here in North America(US and Mexico) just like the other Domestics.

It is a rubber plug for the hole correct? If so it is the same as every other Toyota manual transmission bell housing I have ever had my hands on. The r151f had a round rubber plug in the bottom of them as well no gasket just a plug.

Did they separate the bell housing from the trans housing on the RC62? Did they go back to the bolt on cast steel front bearing retainer?

The RA60 the bell housing was cast onto the trans housing. It also did not have s pilot bearing on the input shaft witch IMHO was the cause of half of the issue as far as end play and shaft run out. The throw out bearing issue was because of the aluminum "nose cone" with a steel bearing carrier sliding on it... Yeah that's a recipe for failure...
