For me, once I started adding on all the options to an SR5, it was only a little bit more to just jump to the OR and get the locker. This is my primary mode of transportation so although it will see some dirt and sand and possibly muddy dirt roads, I wouldn't take it off-roading like what hard core off-roaders consider off-roading. Don't want to risk having to spend money on repairing my ride to work. Just need to haul my toys through the desert in the bed and I think the locker is enough for me to get me where I'm going.

If I wanted to do real off-roading I'd definitely go 4x4 with locker on a used Tacoma or 4Runner.

I agree I had a Colorado with traction control that was able to handle a trip with some 4x4 friends I did.

I can't help but laugh every time I read your signature.

As for the OP, most people's off roading consisted to graded roads and maybe a little bit off of that to get to the campground. No need for the 4x4 but the softer shocks and larger sidewalls are nice.

I too went with the Prerunner Offroad. The only time I really needed a 4x4 was when I hit the dunes at Pismo. For local desert running, a locker has been fine.

Honestly I do not do any hardcore off-roading, just stuff like a previous poster has mentioned, mostly getting back to the trailhead, campground, forest service roads, etc. 95% of the stuff I was able to get to with my AWD Subaru. Biggest reason was for resale down the line. Tow package and 4x4 will get top dollar.

Great shape, not abused, not from a shitty salt state, and service records in hand get top dollar.

A majority of 4wd Tacoma buyers will never even use the feature, they just want to feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing they have "four by four".

Whatever you say! The overwhelming majority of people who want a sued Tacoma want the two package, and second they usually want a 4x4, but not always. Other members have mentioned on several occasions her how prospective buyers want those two options.

Of course everyone wants a truck with the things you pointed out. Last time I checked, nobody is specifically looking for a vehicle that's been consumed by salt, that's been banged up and abused with no service records. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out, but if you'd like feel free to give yourself a pat on the back for that.

would have got a 4x2 but then I remembered that I'm really lazy to park on the road so I can just take my truck right on to the beach to surf or carry my heavy ass kayak. But in all seriousness I live in a heavy rain area where mud pools in the roads and some people slide all over the place, I wanted the piece of mind knowing I can just go through it.

I was going to go 4x2 (live in socal), but decided to go for the 4x4. A 4x4 manual off road is almost the same price as a 4x2 auto off road.

The difference in MPG won't mean much to me, and I plan to own the truck for many many years. And although I don't forsee my self rock crawling my daily driver, I never know where I'll go, where I'll travel to or what I'll do years from now. The 4x4 safety net I guess is worth the extra cost to me. Chances are I won't ever use it much, but I don't like to limit myself over a few grand. Most of all the manual transmission is a really attractive option to me.

4x4 pays for itself the first time you need to go get your family and they are stranded in the snow on the other side of town, unless you live in california

Lots of guys like the "look", but don't want to pay the price. I see more lifted 4X2's running oversize tires than 4X4's.

I've been buying trucks and SUV's since the mid 1970's. Made the mistake once of trying to get by with a 4X2. Never again. And I don't do any hard core off roading. I use mine to get into hunting and fishing spots, usually on farm or other un-improved roads. Snow and ice isn't a huge deal even in the mountains of N GA. but we get a decent snow once or twice most years. Looks like the winter of 2015-16 won't be one of them.

Fuel mileage is less than 1 mpg difference. The initial cost is more, but you get a higher percentage of resale back, so it is about a wash long term.

Yup, as @OZ-T mentioned, Prerunner don't exist in the great white north, just 5 luggers.

It's a way for someone to get the TRD trim without the extra cost four wheel drive ads. Don't want one cofigured like that? That is good, Obama won't force you to buy one. More options for consumer = win, even if you would never buy it.

I was referring to the fact I can lock the differential. I'm not sure if it's an open diff or LSD when unlocked. I'm not even 100% I'm saying all this stuff right either.
