Dual Battery System(s)

A bit curious: what kind of auxiliary electrical loads on your truck would require relay banks in the fuse block? Are we talking fridges, communications, lighting, winch, compressor, etc.?

A rule of thumb... any load that draws more than 10 (ish) amps should have a relay if possible. This eliminates the need for heavy duty, expensive, bulky switches and heavy gauge cable run all over your vehicle. Anything you would like to turn on from the cab but isn't necessarily mounted in the cab would use a relay.

 

yea, it does..was wondering how that would work out, must've missed something in the earlier pages. I was hoping for the single tray to evenly distribute the weight but if dual is my destiny so be it! looking forward to it, planning on doing a lot of camping this spring and summer

 

Yeah, the dual setup will be your answer. Honestly, Ive run duals in the stock location for YEARS and never had a problem. I can't even notice a difference in weight distribution or suspension ride height.

I may be able to get the dual tray ready in less than two weeks... but don't quote me on that.

 

Take a look at post# 87 on page 5. You will need to reroute the air duct or leave it off.

Im starting to get an idea of what the whole kit will cost. I'd rather not throw the number out there until you guys get to see some pics of the finished product. The amount of quality going in to these is insane. Im not just saying that because they're mine... but because I have a few friends helping me that include an aircraft mechanic and an electrical engineer. They absolutely refuse to settle for anything that isn't aircraft grade or mil-spec, etc...

What I can tell you is that it will be around the same price as most packages on the market that include the tray, solenoid, and wiring... However, with my kit, you will get a lot more. A few examples are: Techflex braided cable wrap, 3M marine grade heat-shrink, aviation grade lugs, mil-spec terminals (10 bucks a pair, seriously), and the best part... A proven, 500 amp (double that of anyone else!), voltage-sensing, Blue Sea Relay with a harness custom-wired for your setup. No one else offers any of that.

Just so you don't have to search... the other full kit on the market goes for $599.00

I am trying to work in this area while offering WAY more quality.

I was actually just going to send out a feeler for locals... so here it is...

I have the first batch of 2nd Gen Taco single battery trays in my hands. They need a bit more work but should be ready to go by the weekend. I would like the first couple of sales to go to local folks that are willing to come to my place for a custom install. This will give me the opportunity to triple check the fit and make sure you're happy with the product. Then I will feel comfortable selling them on line.

Nope! Im doing everything I can to make these kits all inclusive. A lot of other kits require that you buy battery terminals or extra lugs, wiring, heat shrink, cable wrap, etc. That's what frustrated me to no end when I was looking to buy a clean kit for my Tacoma. Thus, I started designing my own kits.

Some optional extra accessories will include an an auxiliary fuse box, extra cable, extra cable lugs, and heavy duty ANL inline fuses. These will be an additional cost and are nice to have but are by no means necessary to run your system.

 

A little update for everyone...

Ive been told by my TIG welder that I should have some complete trays buy tomorrow night. That means the prototype comes out of my truck and the production model goes in. Then I will finally get everyone the pics they've been waiting for. Along with the pics, expect a full list of prices. As promised earlier... These are officially ready to go on Saturday.

 

ive seen something about a big three electrical upgrade are those components upgraded in this system?

 

No they are not. Well, technically, my kit does upgrade the battery to chassis cable (for the second battery)... so thats one of the three. While I feel that the "big 3 upgrade" is a worthwhile modification to some... I can tell you from experience that it is overkill for most.

One of the goals with my systems is to make them very user friendly to install. The big 3 upgrade takes a bit of time, energy, and manipulation of the factory harness to do properly/ cleanly. I have had very high energy consumers on my trucks for years and never reached the limits of what my factory harness could handle (1st or 2nd Gen Taco).

That being said.... Im always happy to work with folks on custom installs. If you know the lengths and gauges of cable you would like, I would be happy to make them for you. I'll cut them to length, crimp lugs, and apply techflex and heat shrink to the outside.

 

Alright Folks... Here it is!

Introducing the most over-engineered battery tray ever built. This is the 2nd Gen Tacoma Passenger-Side Single Battery Tray. It fits without permanent modification of the truck in any way. The fuel resistor simply swivels 90 degrees on the factory harness and is bolted to your new tray. The tray is then secured via three factory studs and the two holes where the resistor used to mount. Total install time is less than 10 minutes.

The tray and tie-down are cut via water-jet out of 1/4" Aluminum
It will come with all new zinc-coated hardware
The tray comes pre-assembled as you see here
