Is there anyway I can add a tie down point there? Do you think those threaded holes will be strong enough?

You talking about the holes just below the rear windshield on the bed? If that's what you're talking about it's where the piece sits that supports the OEM tonneau cover.

 

Yeah, I know it's for the factory tonneau. I just want to know if those threaded holes are strong enough for a tie down loop of I make one.

 

Why not just install the bedrail from the 2nd Gen and you can have all the tie down points you want?

I don't trust the bed cleats to hold up my motorcycles.

 

If your not going to trust a bed cleat mounted to a rail then why trust the tonneau mount?

 

I put a couple stainless steel bolts to put in those holes. Have no clue what they are for.

 

Huh? The bed cleats are on the rail. The 2 bolt holes are on the bed itself.

 

if you do that make sure you use a backing plate to distribute the load

 

I know that, probably only 2 or 3 small bolts that hold the rail. If you have the cleats tight they aren't going to move. I don't know exactly what the threads look like you want to tie to but it sounds less stable than using the cleats

 

There are 5 bolts holding the front rail in place. The plastic bed cleats are only rated 200 or so lbs (and not laterally) If you tie down 2 bikes on the bike using a cleat in the middle, you've already gone beyond the holding weight limit.

There just so happens that there are 2 threaded bolt holes in front of the bed (for the OEM Tonneau cover) I want to fab a u bolt and use those threaded holes as a tie down point.

Sure I can buy the front bed rail and install (see 5 bolts underneath) and use a bed cleat, but the cleats are not strong enough.

 

I've never had issues tieing two bikes down on one cleat

If you wanna do it, then do it. There's only one way to find out if it'd be strong enough.

 

I would buy the rail and find better cleats that work with the rail or make your own. Or custom make some d-rings that will mount to the bed bolts in the front. Unless that's too low for you. Guessing your already using the 2 front corner bracket mounts?

 

Dirt bikes maybe OK, but my ducati sport bikes? I don't want to risk it.

 

Now I find it hard to believe that you can fit two sport bikes in the bed of your truck

 

Exactly what I want to do.. Add a d ring right in the middle and front of the bed using the 2 threaded holes. Just wondering if it is strong enough.

Yes, the 2 front grey mounts are used too. Some bikes, I don't like to criss/cross tie downs. Thus, I want a tie down point in the middle.

 

What about the BAMF corner brackets?

 

Can't tell if you're serious.. I used to take 2 sport bikes on my 2nd gen tacoma to the track all the time (same bed size as 3rd gen). I did the criss/cross tie down thing, but with my new truck I wanted to make life easier by adding a 3rd D-ring in the middle.

Thanks, I got the corners covered -- gonna use the tie down points on the front side of the bed.

I just want a tie down point between the 2 bikes in front of the bed.

A bed buddy would be obvious, but I can't use that because I have a tri fold cover and the bed buddy has a tie down that points straight up in the middle.
