Actually, its not illegal, at least where I am. I work for a casket company currently. The most common burial practice is a massive concrete vault (that will crack, and leak) covered by a lead top. The casket goes inside, usually made out of metal, but wood options are available. The caskets will leak as well, when the body decomposes. The company making the pods also make an urn version.

 

Besides the stupidity of doing that to your lips, but the sanitation....

Back in the day when I wrote well permits, I'd have to locate them at least 300' from cemeteries because of the possibility of embalming fluid contaminating groundwater.
