Why'd you buy your OR 4x4 instead of Sport?

Same with me. The offroad has the larger ring gear and a new type of E-Locker than the 2nd gen. The 4x4 without the locker got the smaller ring gear. I am with you though, I wish the front approach view was better. I am adding a front cam to help with that.

If you care about looks get OffRoad.
If you care about performance/functions get OffRoad.

If you care about hood scoop, get Sports. :)

the locker does not have a larger ring gear, it just has a backing plate that they measure and say it's bigger

A helluva lot cheaper to add a fake hood scoop and some paint than it is to swap out suspension, better braking system, add an e-locker, crawl control and MTS

Because fake hood scoops are fake ... but seriously, the selling point on the OR for me was the A-TRAC. I've seen how well that performs with a 4Runner. I really wanted a manual transmission Tacoma above all else. The Sport didn't come with A-TRAC but the OR did, so I went with the OR.

image.jpg TRD OR kicks Sport tail. Not even close in overall performance. And it looks better too.

Ha, well I'd bet to say that 99% of those with a TRD OR or Sport will never use the trucks to their full potential, and I really doubt that the TRD Sport is really that less capable in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing! It's all marketing making you think you need either of the TRD's. I'd dare say that a 4x4 SR5 is probably more capable of a truck than most of us will ever need! The guys who are hardcore off-road enthusiasts are going to rip out all the stuff anyway and make their trucks into something thats way more capable than any TRD Sport or OR. I just think people really have no clue. Hell, I'd dare to say a flippin' AWD Subaru Outback would get most of us where we need to go. Let's be 100% honest here, most of us (myself included) only bought either of the TRD's because we can, and we just like the bragging rights and the look of the trucks, period. There are the few that may put a stock TRD Sport or OR to the limit of it's capability, but I bet those people are way more few and far than you think!

Since most of my driving is on the road, with the occasional light OR excursion, I chose the Sport. Liked the ride better on the freeway, like the looks better, plain and simple. If I ever thought to myself that I bought an inferior truck compared to the OR for the stuff I use my truck for I'd be lying to myself! At least I'm able to admit that. Most guys here can't or won't. You don't need Crawl Control to shuttle your kids to t-ball practice or go on that once a year camping trip down a dirt road, which is what most people are using these for!

And if I ever needed a fully locking rear on my Sport I'd install something aftermarket that's superior to what comes standard on the OR.

I find it funny how most of these threads are usually started by someone who owns an OR, and somehow they have to either justify to themselves why they bought a truck that they most likely will never do any hardcore off-roading with, or make themselves feel better by criticizing those who bought Sports. What ever if takes to make you feel better!

And one last thing...those of you who constantly bash the Sports for the non-functional hood scoop are probably the same guys who are drooling over the 2017 TRD Pro...that guess what... also has a non-functional hood scoop, which to me makes zero sense for a 'serious off-roading vehicle' given that it really does limit your visibility over the front end. Any serious off-road enthusiast would ditch that hood scoop in a second, which again proves my point that the majority off people who off-road here aren't as hardcore as they want us to think.

Your rationalization would only make sense if everyone who bought a TRD Sport had intentions of doing those things! Most who bought the Sport aren't going to do those things, so it's a moot point. Now, if you bought a Sport and then did decide to change all of those things out instead of just buying a OR, than yeah, I'd say you're a moron. Just get the model/version you like, and give less shits about what others want.

Yeah, those Predator tube steps really make sense on a hardcore, off-road vehicle! Ha! If you actually did any real off-roading you would have already ripped those things off and put on some legitimate sliders, or the terrain would have already ripped them off for you.

I have used MTS on a section of down hill rock where MTS was safer than going down with just my foot on the brakes. I didn't need it, but I paid for MTS rather than painted fender flares and a fake hood scoop so I used MTS where it aided my decent.

This thread is a parody of a guy trying to justify his purchase of the SPORT he bought. He mentions he made the thread to justify his purchase somewhere in there. You can see that my first post (OP) is exactly what he wrote with Sport changed to OR and the features reversed between the models
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/whyd-you-buy-your-sport-4x4-instead-of-or.419812/

I do not think the 2017 Tacoma TRD PRO is a serious off-road vehicle nor will serious off-road enthusiasts ever buy the 2017 Tacoma TRD PRO. That's why it has a stupid fake hood scoop

I chose the sport because I think it looks better. Also, for my 4X4 needs, the Sport is more than adequate. Snow, mild off-road, etc. Nothing drastic. Personal preference.

the Op was just curious why people chose the OR over the Sport, yet someone decided to go off the deep end. Suppose I shouldn't expect any different. Basic question is the OR more capable offroad then the Sport, answer is yes, that's what it was designed for. As for visibility over the hood, scoop or not, it's difficult. Scoop, it would have been nice if it was functional, but it is not. So brief synapsis, if your going to go offroad more than 3x a month or where you want to take it is shall we say beyond the sports capability, then get the OR. However other than that, get the sport or spend your money any way you please, its your truck its your money, get what makes you happy. For me I would rather have more capability than less, just in case.

I like how the sport looks. Going to add ARB lockers anyways. MTS/Crawl control are cool. Wish I had those.

if your gonna add lockers, that is pretty much it. MTS/Crawl, nice to have but not a necessity. The rest I would say aren't "major" differences.

Exactly. Comes down to preference. I was on the fence. Availabilty played a part as well. Had both been available locally when I was ready to buy, it would've been a tough choice, but I'm happy with my decision.
