My father has a 1961 Mercedes Benz 190 who's brake pedal went to the floor a couple of times unexpectedly. The system wasn't loosing brake fluid and the pedal was not spongy, it just went to the floor a couple of times then could be pumped up.

Turned out it was caused by a casting defect in the master cylinder. There was a bubble in the casting that intersected the piston's bore.

If the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and then can be pumped up I'd suspect the master cylinder.

Talked to the dealer and the test procedure is different. Meet with the GM and one of the techs. Left the truck there to have the field service tech look at it again. The tech I talked to said he wouldn't drive it home without replacing the ABS. Call Toyota Care to update my case. GM said that will help them to get parts approved. Toyota care told me if not fixed to file a complaint and a case manager will take it over. Talked about replacement truck or buy back options. I will say the dealer and Toyota are helpful. Tomorrow will be a big day.

Correct me if Im wrong here...
The master cylinder can have a leaking gasket on the piston and you'll not loose fluid now see anything wet.
I believe I would have them replace that with new.
Otherwise, if somehow 'electronics' is telling the brake system to 'not function', well trade the truck AT THE DEALER. Let them eat it.

Ok, I read back to your recent posts; they ARE going to replace components. GOOD.
To say "we can't duplicate the symptom" does not make it go away or not exist.
SomeTHING HAS to be done, even its its not definitive.

This is GREAT example of the kind of service you can get if you don't go into the dealer kicking and screaming.

Being level headed and stating facts w/o demands gets the ball rolling. Nice to see they agree to change the ABS unit even w/o finding direct fault with it.

    Keep us posted!

They have not agreed with that yet. The tech said that is what he would do. That is what I'm pushing for right now.

I'm amazed they are taking this kindly.
The lawsuit alone if you brought the truck in for brake failure and they released the truck without actually figuring out what caused it with the chance it could happen again?

Who cares how big they are, after the prius throttle sticking problem a few years back you'd think toyota would be concerned.

You'd think they'd have it towed in and figure out whats wrong. I'd be calling head office right now. Anything with safety should be number 1 for toyota

I wish you the best of luck. I would not trust to drive the truck like you mentioned.

Me either. I would be going the replacement route. Complete truck replacement, at NO cost to you.

Do you need to know, or care?
I don't want to make light of this, but I can't stop thinking ratcheted brake pedal.

Good luck OP, let us know the results.

Would a scanner possibly show any codes for this?

They did say it was unsafe to drive and had me tow it in. They also did release it without finding a problem. I stated my safety concerns and the GM said to leave it and stay in the rental. Between myself, girl friend, her mom, sister and brother in law we have bought 10 Toyotas from that dealer in the last five years. I think that is why the GM is so willing to help.

Really hope I don't have to go that route. Toyota corporate already talked to me about replacement and buy back possibilities. If I have no results tomorrow that is the next step.

Guess your one of those sue happy kinda guys? You think a lawyer can do anything when there was no accident nor damage, and the dealer couldn't replicate the issue? Very, very unlikely. Does it warrant an attorney if he's driving and the brakes fail and someone is injured? Absolutely. But at this point there is nothing an attorney can do. Give the techs a chance to look at it and try find and fix the issue, instead of getting your panties in a bunch and tell the OP to trade the truck in or make them give you one.

Not saying that the OP doesn't have an issue, first step to fixing any problem is to duplicate it. Hope they find and fix your issue OP, especially because that's such a huge safety concern
