2nd gen backup camera and in-dash audio upgrade

Hey y'all
I'm looking to upgrade the current in dash stereo pos that I have in my truck.
It's an old jensen dvd/touchscreen and it doesn't work with my steering wheel buttons. I want to get a good upgrade and also attach a backup camera but I have no idea where the camera goes and how to hook it up. I am shopping on crutchfield for the in dash system but I wanted to see if you guys had any kind of suggestions on which brand is best or if there are any that come as a combo, where the camera goes, etc. Anything would help!

My first thought is how much do you want to, or can spend?

I kinda like the Kenwood HU's. For me, if I were replacing the stock touch screen, I'd get a Kenwood touch screen with nav. Kenwood uses Garmin nav, so it's just like the portable nav I use on my other cars and bike. It will interface with your steering wheel controls, (with the install kit.) and you can install a backup camera. They usually go in the tailgate handle. It will also control Iphones, Bluetooth XM...

That said, it probably won't be cheap... But it's only money, you'll make more...lol

 

I was looking at the jensen vx7020 but it says that I need to pay 140 for the adapter kit which is crazy to me. I will have to look into the kenwoods to see. Everything that I can find on crutchfield.com is like a mix and match backup camera and stereo. I cant find a setup that just comes with both. Are there any other sites out there that will have more options?

 

Currently I have a Jensen vm9223 and nothing but the radio works... anyone know how to hook up Bluetooth ot nav to this pos?

 

It's normal to buy the camera and head unit separately, most cameras just use RCA cables to plug into the head unit....buy a head unit that has a layout you like then find a camera that mounts how you like. Factory is up by the tail gate handle and that works well because they stay closer to clean.

This isn't the cheapest way to go but it's the easiest way to get a clean install camera for an aftermarket headunit

I have a Pioneer AVH in my VW TDI with a backup camera installed and it works well, one thing to keep in mind is if your windows aren't tinted sunlight will wash out your display regardless of brand....my factory Toyota display is no better so that's another thing you might want to add into your total cost if you want to be able to see your backup display all the time.

For about $200 this is a good deal on a nice headunit with camera capabilty

If you buy from Crutchfield they'll give you the harness and scoshe or metra trim kit along with everything. I have an older pioneer avh that I like, it works well and has built in bluetooth. If you already have steering wheel controls it should be fairly easy to hook up everything. Probably the hardest thing for you would be installing the backup camera and running it's wire forward, after that it's just connecting the same colors to things. I'd recommend using posi-connect fittings (posi-tap) or soldering. There's a really helpful install thread somewhere here, search for it and it gives good step by step instructions.
