Mine is stock and I've been all over the place. Toyota is a huge company and built an "Offroad" version of the Tacoma, you can rest assured it is good enough. Just get some sliders first our off all the mods you may get as they'll save your sides.

Are there any brands that are known for their quality rock sliders? or any brands that should be avoided?

As far as quality goes, just about all of them about equal. It's essentially steel tubing bend and welded and most use the same diameter and thickness. The main differences are style (kick-out or no kick-out, over all appearance, powder coat or paint) and they way they attach to the truck. You can get weld on or bolt on. With bolt on some use factory holes, some you have to drill.

I chose SOS Concepts, a vender here on TW, because he does amazing work and I like the look it gave my truck. I went with bolt on that you have to drill the frame to mount because I was wanted a very solid mount that I could remove if I needed to (i.e. I bent them badly or something). I also chose to get the kick out in the back to use as a step for easier bed access near the front of the bed. Yes, it added a couple inches of width on either side, but I am not taking my truck between rocks so narrow that I barely fit. It is still not any wider than the fenders on the truck.

SOS Concepts is run by @EddyRRT and if you look at the vendor section you will find it.

Just be sure to test the depth of some "puddles" before driving through it. My buddy called me the other day to help him out with his stock 2nd Gen TRD Sport 4x4. Can't do much when the air intake starts to pump water into the engine and it shuts off.

After the fact when he was showing us how deep the middle is with a stick...The stick broke in half and he went face 1st into the water. THAT was funny.

Out of curiosity, does the sport have A-Track or a locker?

If you're looking for a lift, call Marie at Headstrong Off-road. Just tell her what you want to do and she'll take care of the rest.

    I
Ive wheeled with guys with the sport. Its an endless discussion. But there realy is no question. An offroad is more capable. So i second your opinion. Glad i got the offroad as well.

    Whole lotta stuff
Depends on the year. 2005-2009 TRD Sport models come with a mechanical limited slip differential. Much better than an open diff. My 06 has had pretty good traction, still not a locker, but at least I don't have to turn it on and off.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
If you're getting water up to the bottom of the doors you need to be VERY concerned. The air intake on these trucks is just behind the passenger side bottom wheel well and can be prone to sucking up water in high crossings.

You'll want a snorkel to cross water that deep safely. The damage from sucking up water can be BAD, real bad.

They can do it cheaper by using a brake-based LSD.
